Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring Says He Wore Blackface At College Party

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia sank deeper into political turmoil Wednesday when another top Democrat — Attorney General Mark Herring — admitted putting on blackface in the 1980s, when he was a college student.

...Herring issued a statement saying he wore brown makeup and a wig in 1980 to look like a rapper during a party as a 19-year-old at the University of Virginia.
...
In his statement, Herring said he and two friends dressed up to look like rappers they listened to, including Kurtis Blow, admitting: “It sounds ridiculous even now writing it.”

“That conduct clearly shows that, as a young man, I had a callous and inexcusable lack of awareness and insensitivity to the pain my behavior could inflict on others,” he said.

He's taking a higher road in announcing this than Gov. Northam, it seems. And the circumstances seem to be a bit different since he was imitating a rapper he listen to.

never heard a Michael Jackson song?

I've been reluctant to admit this, over the last week or so, but this seems like a good time to bring this out. I didn't know that blackface was racist until Ted Danson got holy hell for it. And the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings made me cringe at all the sexual innuendos in some of the jokes I told at work during the Seventies and Eighties.

It was just a few months ago that Megyn Kelly had to get very publically educated on this, remember? A lot of white folks just didn't pick up on the fact that blackface images simply disappeared, and had no clue why. Sometimes, it takes a good example of a bad example to make a teachable moment.

It is not surprising to me that Gov. Northam had not experienced that moment for himself by 1984.
