Nelson County to hold program Sunday for those killed 50 years ago in Camille flooding

Nelson County to hold program Sunday for those killed 50 years ago in flooding from Hurricane Camille

From staff reports Aug 12, 2019

The Nelson County Historical Society will commemorate the 50th anniversary of deadly flooding that devastated the county in August 1969 with a memorial program on Sunday in Lovingston.

The event, which will be held at 2 p.m. at Nelson County High School, will memorialize the 124 people who died Aug. 19-20, 1969, when more than 2 feet of rain from the remnants of Hurricane Camille triggered flooding and landslides.

The historical society also is producing a commemorative book of photographs and stories about the disaster and its impact on the county. Hardcover editions are $40, and softcovers are $30. Books will be available for pickup at the historical society’s office at Oakland Museum after Aug. 19.

For details about the program or the book, visit www.nelsonhistorical.org or call (434) 263-8400.

Hurricane Camille chronicler dies in wreck along Davis Creek shy of 50th anniversary

BY MICHAEL MARTZ Richmond Times-Dispatch 22 hrs ago

Tiffany Ann Spencer hadn't been born when the remnants of Hurricane Camille devastated Nelson County and her extended family along Davis Creek. ... But Spencer, 44, who died in a car wreck on Aug. 9, came to know each of the lives lost in the flood and landslides caused by torrential rain from the storm on Aug. 19-20, 1969.

Her grandparents, Adelaide and Tom Huffman, survived the storm that killed more than 50 people on Davis Creek alone, including at least 20 members of their extended family. ... "She grew up hearing from her grandmother about the tragedy of Camille," said Heywood "Woody" Greenberg, secretary of the Nelson County Historical Society. "She dedicated herself to keeping their memory alive."

Spencer and her work will be remembered on Sunday in a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of Camille, which killed 153 people statewide, including 124 in Nelson.
