The Homecoming board of Virginia Tech released a statement Feb. 20 regarding the change in Homecoming Royalty. Three students will be selected this year for royalty instead of one man and one woman.
Virginia Tech has celebrated Homecoming since 1926, and candidates have run on philanthropic platforms since 2015.
The purpose of the shift is to give more people a chance to win while also further promoting their philanthropic causes.
To promote inclusivity and emphasize our focus on cause-based platforms, we've made changes to Homecoming Court, their website stated.
Other campus groups collaborated alongside the Homecoming board as well, the statement read.
In addition, the statement mentioned that the board strives to be inclusive of all members of our community regardless of gender identity. Furthermore, this change aligns with the boards values and their commitment to Ut Prosim.
