Virginia Sen. Amanda Chase sues over being censured

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia state senator seeking the Republican nomination for governor filed a federal lawsuit Monday over her legislative colleagues' recent decision to censure her.

The Virginia Senate approved a measure rebuking Sen. Amanda Chase for a “pattern of unacceptable conduct” last week in a bipartisan vote. The vote followed a long debate that featured scathing criticisms of Chase from both Democrats and Republicans.

In a news release announcing the lawsuit, Chase's office said she was “being singled out and selectively penalized for taking unpopular political positions.”

The censure measure was introduced after Chase used a floor speech to defend Ashli Babbitt, a woman who was fatally shot by U.S. Capitol Police during the January insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Chase herself is one of many state lawmakers from around the country who attended a rally shortly before the attack on the Capitol, but she was not part of the group that later stormed the building.

Because a Con Law 101 student can tell you the courts won't touch the suit. This is an internal political matter, not a legal issue.

some GOP members also voted for the censure.

It is not just the January 6th nonsense she spouted,

Chase trash-talked the Senate’s always-professional clerk, hurled profanity at a Capitol police officer, disparaged rape victims as weak, pooh-poohed the pandemic, derided Democrats as racists and defended as “patriots” the Trump-incited insurrectionists who carried out the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The thing with the cop happened a couple years ago.

I think she thought this would make a big splash when she jumped in the race. She started by going at it with her own party. She didn’t consider that as partisan as even we are there’s a serious pause taken inside the General Assembly. Respect for the body is very evident in how they deal with each other. Firebrands don’t tend to last long there at least not with much power.

But she started this too far away from the election to keep the steam going. Plus she’s a nut.
