Double whammy: State ferry fares go up, then go up again
Fares on Washington State Ferries will be going up -- twice.
The Washington State Transportation Commission on Tuesday approved a two-phase ferry hike, plus a surcharge that will go toward building a new $187 million Olympic class hybrid electric ferry.
A 2.5% fare hike for vehicles will kick in on Oct. 1, along with a 5% fare increase for oversize vehicles on the Anacortes-Sidney, B.C., run. Foot passengers would pay an additional 2%.
The commission voted to jack up the no-show fee for those with reservations, by up to 100% for the one-way fare.
The state does it again on May 1, 2020. Fares for vehicles go up by 2.5%, with a 2% hike for foot passengers. There will also be a 25 cent increase for the capital surcharge, dedicated to construction of the new vessel.
