As the weather turns cold, Kitsap volunteers gear up for emergency homeless shelters
PORT ORCHARD With temperatures starting to dip lower and lower, volunteers are gearing up to re-open Kitsaps emergency winter shelters.
Kitsap Countys emergency winter shelters provide potentially life-saving respite for those experiencing homelessness during dangerous winter weather. However, last winter's particularly brutal weather only underscored that running the emergency shelter system is no small feat.
The shelters are managed by the county but run by volunteers a network of individuals who put in thousands of hours of unpaid work to keep the spaces open on nights with sub-freezing temperatures, snowfall, heavy rain or high winds.
Last season, more than 170 volunteers helped operate the shelters, logging more than 4,000 hours and providing more than 1,100 overnight stays throughout the winter, according to the county.
