'Rededicated': Sawant volunteers ready to 'fight' for socialist foothold
It was like being transported back six years for socialist Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant as the first results dropped; in a room brimming with volunteers and supporters, she announced that opponent Egan Orion was 8.4% ahead of her in the race for District 3.
But six years ago, she won, as the late vote leaned left and forced her then-incumbent opponent Richard Conlin to concede.
In 2019, the lead may be harder to shrink as Orion had a hefty surge of money from Amazon late in the race. Sawant said it wasn't over though, and that the ordinary, working class people can vote late, swinging the pendulum back to her.
Still, Orion's lead was larger than Conlin's had been. Conlin also didn't have the backing of Amazon.
Her fervent volunteers were "rededicated" after Sawant announced the initial King County election results to a sea of supporters, activists and Socialist Alternative members in the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute in Seattle's Central District.
