Little sign of a Seattle City Council flip in latest vote totals
The Seattle City Council "flip," boosted by seven-figure campaign spending by business, hasn't shown up in the second batch of on-the-ground election returns, released late Wednesday by King County elections.
Two progressive candidates, incumbent Councilmember Lisa Herbold in District 1 and Tammy Morales in District 2, maintained leads in two South Seattle Council contests.
Herbold has a 51.65-48% lead over opponent Phil Tavel, heavily backed by the Civic Alliance for a Sound Economy (CASE), political action committee of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. Morales has 55.84% to 43.65% for Mark Solomon, backed by business and dismissed as "another socialist" by Mayor Jenny Durkan.

The most watched contest, and one where a business-backed candidate is ahead, is in District 3. Socialist Councilmember Kshama Sawant trails eight point behind challenger Egan Orion. He has 53.83% of the vote, down from 53.99% in the Tuesday vote count. She is at 45.78%.
Sawant trailed behind Councilmember Richard Conlin by eight points in 2013, but used late ballots to catch and beat him. A big get-out-the-vote drive by then-Mayor Mike McGinn put wind in her sails. Sawant is presently 1,925 vote behind Orion, veteran organizer of the Capitol Hill Pridefest.
