Got squid? Why officials say you should catch and eat it out of Puget Sound

Forget fishing for salmon. Puget Sound crab pots are so passé. Squid is in.

For the first time in a couple decades, officials have tested squid in Puget Sound for metals and other contaminants. Results are very positive, and now they say that squid is a great option for fishing and eating out of Puget Sound.

“It’s encouraging because we have more and more pollution going into Puget Sound that’s resulting in contaminated fish, which causes consumption advisories preventing people from eating fish they can catch," said Jenee Colton with the King County Department of Natural Resources. "So to have a species that is available, to easily access, to catch for consumption, and safe to eat is very promising. And it doesn’t look like squid will be hazardous to consume in the near future. We’re looking at a pretty bright picture as far as squid goes.”

Squid doesn't have a lot of fat content, which means that it doesn't store a lot of contaminants like other seafood does. The county now says that squid is safe to eat for 8-12 meals a month.

Pretty tasty but they were not from around here

We'd pull a couple tons in our trawls and it was squid city.
