Inslee outlines new rules for limiting nursing home visits

By Martha Bellisle and Rachel La Corte / Associated Press

SEATTLE — Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on Tuesday outlined a list of requirements for long-term care facilities aimed at helping to stop the spread of the new coronavirus and a nursing home in Issaquah reported the death of a resident, bringing the total deaths in the state to at least 23.

At a news conference Inslee also said the state is preparing for many more cases than have been reported, potentially tens of thousands, based on estimates of the spread of the disease. Health officials report more than 160 confirmed cases statewide, and Inslee said that number is likely much higher.

“If we assume there are 1,000 or more people who have the virus today….the number of people who are infected will double in five to eight days,” Inslee said. “If you do the math, it gets very disturbing.”

The state has experienced the worst outbreak of COVID-19 in the nation. And nineteen of the 23 deaths are linked to the Life Care Center, a nursing home in Kirkland.

They show pictures on the news of people peering in the windows at LifeCare, looking at their loved ones. Sigh.

I know this is the right thing, but it makes me so sad.
