Durkan halts evictions of small businesses and nonprofits

Small businesses have been creamed by the spread of the coronavirus, and now those in Seattle unable to pay rent can't be evicted.

Mayor Jenny Durkan on Wednesday signed an emergency order temporarily halting evictions of small-business and nonprofit tenants. It is effective immediately for any action related to non-payment or expiration of a lease’s term during the moratorium.

The moratorium will be in effect for at least 60 days. A decision to extend it will be evaluated and determined by the mayor based on public health needs, Durkan's office said.

Independently owned businesses with 50 or fewer employees per establishment, state nonprofits and 501(c)(3) nonprofits are eligible for eviction protection.

Courts will likely close soon, or be there for only criminal cases, but I doubt even that. They can't ask people to come to jury duty so ...

I would not worry about evictions at all. I realize those who own buildings, or rental units will not get paid, but evicting tenants will not be very useful. They won't be able to rent to someone new, right?

I'd tell people pay for other things, rent would be last on my list if I was strapped. I'd rather have food and essentials. I am a homeowner and house is paid off so this is just my opinion were I to pay rent. Just seems it's such a huge chunk of cash and with no more $ coming in for the foreseeable future seems prudent.
