Washington
Related: About this forumWe're having a bit of an emergency here at the coast
I live in a beach fishing town on the Washington coast, and its pretty quiet 9 months out of the year. We get pretty good tourist traffic here Mid June thru Labor Day. The rest of the year youre hard pressed to see two cars on the road at the same time.
We - and every other beach town along the coast and down into Oregon - were overrun with people coming out here to vacation since theyre all on lockdown. I am not exaggerating when I say thousands of people came here, to a county holding steady with one infection for over a week, from the Seattle area, where the infection is rampant! Thousands of people, going to our one grocery store and three gas stations - with zero regard for what they could be bringing here to our predominantly retiree aged population. Where weve worked hard to isolate, help flatten the curve, look after our elderly and just try to stay safe. All that work being undone by these thoughtless people disregarding the pleas to isolate and stay home. It is fucking outrageous, and it is statistically impossible that none of these THOUSANDS of people are carrying infection.
Inslee said in his presser yesterday he didnt want to impose a state-wide stay at home order, but he would if people didnt start acting right. Now, thanks to these people we at minimum need to close all beaches and state parks - if not also shut down all non-essential business. What these thoughtless people have done is just gobsmackingly selfish and ignorant.
UPDATE: Our uproar was not for naught! Last night the city of Westport issued an emergency resolution ordering all the visitor accommodations to close within 24 hours. Today they put up roadblocks to the beaches. They don't have jurisdiction to close the beaches, but they can close the roads! Also today, the state just now shut down all state parks, and asked everyone to stay off the beaches. This is huge for us. There's several little state park areas with tent and RV camping here at the beach, and they were full as well. Thankfully they're closing now. I know I was only one of probably hundreds of emails and calls made since yesterday afternoon, but it is gratifying to know we were heard. I wish I could paint the picture of what it was really like here yesterday...and it was that way along the entire coast.
It'll be interesting to see what our infection rate looks like 14 days from now. Our county has held steady at ONE confirmed case for over a week. Here's hoping it will stay that way.

This not only pissed off the locals but is/will put a strain on medical services there.
And when things started to get bad in Italy, a lot of northerners headed to the south.

(3,266 posts)as a vacation spot - it doesnt feel like a neighborhood community to them. They dont make the connection that people live, eat, breathe and work here. This aint Disneyland! This is a community - a city - that happens to have a beach.
Im in Westport, just across the bay. I heard Ocean Shores was just as inundated as we.

(60,010 posts)Fla. has shut down Key West to anyone but residents. Key west is Southern most part of Fla., one long road, so shutting it down at the north end effectively ends any unwanted traffic.
OTOH, officials did NOT shut down the beaches, esp. Daytona Beach during Spring Break, until this week. So thousands of college students partied together, then dispersed to their various states, virus and all.

(4,874 posts)I drove today from Newport to Lincoln city. The campgrounds are all full, lots of vacationers. A lot of restaurants are closed or only doing takeout. The people walking around seemed to be distancing themselves, but the campgrounds were worrisome. Some bars still open. Yikes.
Residents of these little towns have all been distancing, but this influx is worrisome, especially for folks in grocery stores.

(14,145 posts)And all you can do is standby and let it happen.
You can't have the town close the beaches with large signs. Then have police patrol the areas ? If they are staying in hotels, those hotels should be shutdown until this pandemic is under control.

(115,681 posts)A city in Norway, Bergen, is exploring a way of counting the number of people in a particular location by counting cell phone sim cards. The system doesn't track or even know which specific individuals are present in an area, just how many people are there. They propose to use this system to ensure compliance with social distancing advisories. The phone owner also would automatically receive a "Welcome" message when entering the city, with a link to a page with information on infection prevention recommendations. I don't know if this is too Big-Brother for Americans but in Norway they are really trying very hard to keep people from gathering in crowds.

(3,266 posts)town was chosen to beta-test the exact same kind of system a couple of years ago....I wonder if all that infrastructure is still in place if they could message all the SIM cards like that here....?! Def gonna check that out.

(25,849 posts)I'll admit that a week or two ago I gave brief thought to taking some kind of a road trip. I do have a brother in Tucson that I perhaps ought to visit -- he's blind, has health issues, but does have a decent support system in place there.
My rationale was that hotels will have plenty of room. And maybe prices will be a bargain. But I don't want to get stuck somewhere, in case states start closing their borders. Of course, I could stay within my own state and have a good trip, except the kinds of places I'd want to visit, parks, museums, whatever, are all closed.
So I'm staying home.
If I thought I'd pretty much never be travelling again I'd go to the animal shelter and adopt a couple of cats. However, I do hope to resume my normal travels whenever this is over.

(6,278 posts)My wife and I drove down to the Nisqually wildlife refuge today, not sure what to expect. But we decided in advance we would not stay if it were crowded. I've never seen so many cars there! We never got out of the car.
This is a global problem. My friend in Paris said that there were so many people crowding recreational areas the first day of major "lockdown" that they amended the orders to say that you could travel no more than 2 km to a park or trail or other recreational amenity.

(1,945 posts)All of the towns along the main highway (395) are small with limited resources. Since the weather has been good there rock climbers have flocked to the largest town--Bishop, because some of the local areas are popular climbing spots. One photo showed dozens of vans and cars parked along the road to one of those spots. Meanwhile, when not climbing these people go into the town and buy up what supplies are there and hang out in the coffee shops, sporting good stores that cater to them, etc. The worst part is the Inyo County hospital, which is in Bishop, has a total of 24 beds! The smaller hospital in Mammoth Mountain, the ski resort which is not quite an hour North of Bishop, has 15. To serve the whole of the Eastern Sierra and some of Nevada.
For days residents that were on Facebook were pleading with people to stay away, go home etc. The majority of the population of the towns up there are older people, so potentially more at risk. Finally the city govt started shutting down the facilities so the tourists, climbers etc had no place to go and they have started leaving. Mammoth shut down all skiing related and non-essential stores. But the attitude was really bad towards the residents that were worried. 'Hey, it's public land out there, we can go if we want!' So sad. I did see a few articles posted from climbing related magazines pointing out the problem and calling for their brethren to be respectful and go home. People are so oblivious!

(1,945 posts)All of the ES towns are small and employment is pretty limited to small service type businesses, other than Cal Trans and some LADWP (LA Dept of Water and Power). So tourist dollars are precious. Not only domestic travelers, but there are tons of Europeans that come through from San Francisco, through Yosemite, down the East side and over to Death Valley. Losing all of those people is going to be crushing to the economy. But it has to be or the alternative is horrible. I think I read the other day that there are less than 10 ventilators total between the 2 hospitals.
Let's hope people will come to their senses in these vulnerable places, and come back when things are safe again.

(1,732 posts)Here in Southern CA, in the middle of a stay at home order, many folks are out in the streets, down at the beach, day-tripping to small towns, flooding the hiking trails, etc... It baffles me how we can be "stay at home" and only leave for essential items and to take care of family, yet so many people go out.
I fear it's going to take a full lock-down imposed by the government and monitored in the streets by the National Guard for people to actually remain inside.
With that being said, National Guard tanks have been deployed all over CA. We might see a full lock-down in our country very, very soon.

(3,266 posts)staying home now. Would that everyone were so wise... But it sure was nice to be heard. Statewide all state parks are closed now, most beach approach roads are closed, vacation rentals shut down. But its going to take a state-wide shutdown of all non-essential businesses and an order to stay home to get those people to behave accordingly. I would say get them to take it seriously but clearly they arent going to be serious about it. But at least they can be ordered to act right....
In Westport we usually hang out on Float #20. Like watching all the people crabbing. We used to occasionally stay at Harbor Resorts, but that place is a real dump now.
