It'd cost over $200M to shelter King County homeless residents amid coronavirus outbreak
It would cost King County about $260 million to have enough shelter space to house people experiencing homelessness and those needing to be isolated or quarantined while following social distancing guidelines amid the COVID-19 outbreak, according to a new report.
The report, published on the National Alliance to End Homelessness website, estimates how much it would cost counties across the country to create enough additional beds to shelter homeless residents in need while making sure everyone had the necessary distance between each other. The report also estimates the cost of providing isolation and quarantine sites for people in need who are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or have tested positive for the virus.
"A cornerstone of the strategy for reducing the infection and transmission rates among the homeless population is to find immediate shelter for those living unsheltered and incorporate social distancing of approximately 100 square feet per person - into existing emergency shelter and transitional housing settings and to isolate people who are symptomatic," the report said.
King County would need thousands more shelter beds, and the cost of the added capacity with reduced density would be about $227 million, according to the report. The cost of additional quarantine beds would cost about $32 million, the report estimates, bringing the total up to nearly $260 million.
