Inslee signs bill authorizing sports betting in Washington tribal casinos
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee this week signed into law a bill authorizing sports betting within Native American casinos.
Its unclear when sports gaming will actually be able to take place, considering the evolving novel coronavirus pandemic that has shut down tribal casinos statewide. The state government must also negotiate sports-betting pacts with Washingtons tribes. But the bill, signed by Gov. Inslee Wednesday, represents a landmark move.
This will allow people to participate in a new gaming activity that is safe and well-regulated by the tribes, said Inslee.
Sports gaming will give the tribal casinos an added financial boost through legalized gambling, which funds various aspects of life in native communities. State tribes take in around $2.8 billion annually through legalized gambling, according to The Seattle Times.
