New effort launched to help dwindling supply in Washington's food banks

Local organizations in Washington are launching a new relief fund to help the state's food banks as they reach dangerously low supply levels amid the novel coronavirus outbreak.

On Tuesday, Gov. Jay Inslee, along with local nonprofits, announced the initiative called the WA Food Fund, which comes as more and more people continue to be impacted by the spread of the novel coronavirus and measures put into place to slow it.

“Washingtonians are generous neighbors who rise to the occasion, and this is a moment for individuals to make a difference,” Inslee said in a statement. “By coming together and contributing to this fund, we can meet this demand across the state and help our neighbors and their families put a meal on the table.”

The WA Food Fund -- managed by Philanthropy Northwest -- will give donations to Food Lifeline, Northwest Harvest and Second Harvest. Those organizations will then distribute donations to food banks across the state.
