Inslee on reopening Washington: 'We are not to the first gate'
Washington's economy will not open back up until the curve of new novel coronavirus cases goes down, and testing ramps up steeply to the extent of the pandemic is fully known, Gov. Jay Inslee told his briefing on Thursday in Olympia.
"We are not to the first gate even in their (Trump administration) guidelines, which is to have a downward curve for 14 days," Inslee said.
The Governor's remarks came amidst initial signs of a pushback against Inslee's "Stay Safe-Stay Home" program. A demonstration is planned in Olympia on Sunday. Noting that Boeing goes back to work next week, State Senate Republican leader Mark Schoesler, R-Ritzville, said: "This should serve as a model for all employees in our state so we can get Washington working again. Let's ensure that employees can work safely. Then let's get them back to work."
But Inslee, strengthened by the Trump Administration yielding to states on reopening, put it bluntly: "We are not going to let our deaths go back up."
