King County rental assistance program gets thousands more applications than it has funds to serve

Taylor Julian had just moved in February into a new apartment in Seattle with her 2-year-old. She is a single mom and had spent most of what she had on the deposits and rent she needed to move in. Then, in mid-March, she was laid off from her full-time job as a bartender as the novel coronavirus outbreak shut down thousands of businesses in the area.

"I didn't have any other assistance or family or friends to help me," she said. "I was pretty worried and stressed. Worried about how I was going to pay my bills and put food on the table."

She applied for rental assistance through a King County organization as soon as it was launched. Soon after, she found out she'd be getting funds. She wouldn't have to worry about her April rent.

"I'm ecstatic," she said.

I mean 5 million from the city is nice but I’d say they need 25 million more. That’s change for Microsoft, Facebook and other tech companies.
