Farmers markets in Spokane area will reopen. Here's how they will look

SPOKANE, Wash. — Farmers markets, considered essential businesses during Washington state’s stay-home order, are looking for ways to adapt to new health guidelines as their opening dates inch closer.

The Washington State Department of Health recently updated its guidelines for farmers markets, which include only allowing vendors that provide essential services. This includes those that provide food and supplies needed to maintain health, safety and sanitation.

Farmers markets are asked not to schedule non-essential services such as live music or other entertainment.

The state has also included guidelines for vendor safety plans and modifying market layouts, including spacing vendor booths at least six feet apart.

You reserve a time slot, order and pay on line. Drive to the park with your name displayed on the windshield. When you get there you pop the trunk. You drive through and pull over at each vendor and your items are placed in your trunk. On your way out your trunk is shut for you.

It took about 15 minutes in line to get in the park. Lots of eye smiles (everybody was masked), shouted thank yous, and waves.

We now have some tomato plants. This was a much safer option than going to the crowded big box stores or garden centers.
