'Unlike anything we've ever seen': New report looks at economic impacts of coronavirus pandemic

More than 4,000 businesses in the Seattle metro area have closed temporarily or permanently since the novel coronavirus outbreak, according to a new report.

The report, from Yelp, found on March 10 that 219 businesses in the Seattle metro area that were opened on March 1 were marked as closed. By April 19, that number shot up to 4,583. Seattle ranked fifth among the major metro areas studied that saw the most closures.

Across the country, more than 175,000 businesses open on March 1 had been marked as closed by April 19. Los Angeles, New York and Chicago ranked as the top three major metro areas with the largest number of business closures.

"The economic changes from the first quarter of 2020 were unlike anything we’ve ever seen," the Yelp report said. "In a period of about 15 days as the nation reacted to the threat of the coronavirus pandemic, the economy transformed as much as it had in Yelp’s prior 15 years of operation, combined."
