Americans like what their governors, including Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington, are doing to deal with the long, painful COVID-19 pandemic that began in March, according to new national and Washington state opinion surveys.
A SurveyUSA poll for KING 5, released this week, found that Inslee's net job approval rating had climbed 29 points in the past 10 weeks. He was at a mediocre 40% thumbs up when the pandemic began, but is now in the high 60s, according to SurveyUSA. A national Survey Monkey poll delivered similar findings.
President Trump, not doing so well. A survey of Washington voters by Public Policy Polling, released Friday, puts Joe Biden in the lead over America's 45th president by a 59-37% margin. Overall, according to PPP's findings, just 36% of Washingtonians approve of Trump's performance, while 60% give him a thumbs down.
The low numbers for Trump, while Inslee is on a roll, speak with alarm to Republican prospects in the November election, when all statewide elective offices and all of Washington's 10 seats in the House of Representatives are on the ballot. Democrats are planning an aggressive push in state legislative races.
Washington has a history of "wipeout" elections, with Republicans in Congress carried away by Democratic landslides in years like 1964 and Democrats yielding bunches of seats to Republicans in 1980 and 1994, Republicans have not held the Governor's office in 35 years, and last elected a U.S. senator in 1994.
