Pier 58, the section of Seattle's waterfront between the Great Wheel and the Seattle Aquarium, on Sunday collapsed into the water with several people on it, according to fire and police officials.
The Seattle Fire Department tweeted at 4:36 p.m. that two construction workers were transported to Harborview Medical Center in stable condition. The Seattle Police Department was vague on the number of people who fell in, but all have been rescued.
Susan Gregg, a spokesperson for Harborview, said the two men who were transported did not have life-threatening injuries.
The pier, a structure supporting Seattle Waterfront Park, was closed about a month ago when city officials discovered the pier had substantially hifted away from land. It was closed and set for dismantling this weekend, two years ahead of schedule.

(27,758 posts)I'm glad the workers are okay.
I haven't been downtown since March and I have no inclination to ever go down there again.

As I understand it, they had removed most of the structure of the fountain and were using concrete cutting tools to remove a 20,000 pound concrete planter that was above it when the structure gave way. They had accelerated the work because the monitoring equipment they had in place showed a greater shift starting on Thursday, and they were attempting to remove as much weight as possible quickly.
The Aquarium structure is sound (it's on relatively new concrete pilings), and they will continue with the removal of the rest of Pier 58. The workers appear to be doing well.
