Study: Cascadia region needs to develop hubs to absorb growth
On its current growth trajectory, the Cascadia megaregion which connects Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. will face congestion by 2035 that resembles the current traffic in Los Angeles or San Jose and it will be less affordable than San Francisco and New York are today by 2040.
The Cascadia Innovation Corridor initiative released its study Monday proposing that public and private entities work together to transform mid-sized cities into hubs for development in order to create room for the regions anticipated growth.
The vast majority of people who live in this megaregion do so because of the quality of life and the natural beauty, Cascadia Innovation Corridor co-chairperson and Challenge Seattle CEO Christine Gregoire said. Both are at grave risk if we are gonna let (the growth) just happen to us yet again, like we've seen happen over the last decade.
The Cascadia Vision 2050 report, including analysis by the Boston Consulting Group, examines how to sustainably grow the Cascadia megaregion and is expected to grow by 3 to 4 million people by 2050.
