Seattle begins accepting applications for 'Stay Healthy' blocks on non-arterial streets
The city of Seattle has opened up applications for "Stay Healthy Block" permits that would close off entire blocks to thru-traffic, allowing residents more space for outdoor recreation and social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stay Healthy Blocks would allow community groups and nonprofit organizations to "temporarily close a street to create more outdoor recreation space for people to enjoy while following social distancing guidelines," according to the Seattle Department of Transportation.
The blocks are expected to be free and open to the general public, and may span more than one block. The closed blocks must be non-arterial streets that buses do not run on to avoid major detours.
City officials hope that the increased access to open outdoor space will result in improved mental and physical health during the novel coronavirus outbreak.
