Washington health officials warn against Thanksgiving gatherings as COVID-19 cases surge

Public health officials are pleading with Washington residents once again to recommit to efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

In a dire warning Tuesday, experts said the state was heading in a bad direction, seeing increases in coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, which could lead to more deaths and the potential to overwhelm the state's hospital systems.

It could take weeks to reverse course — and if people don't do their part, the state could need to put more restrictions back into place.

"We cannot give up. We all need to do our part to flatten the curve once again," Washington State Health Officer Kathy Lofy said during a news briefing Tuesday. "We're at the point that if we cannot change the current trajectory of disease by changing our behaviors, we'll need to take actions that will hurt our economy and no one wants to do that again."

about the possibility of my visiting for Thanksgiving or Christmas. At the time we decided that it wasn't a very good idea. Sigh. I would love to see her and her family, but it would be truly stupid of me to make the trip.

I do need to see if she does zoom, because that could make the day, especially as her grandchildren will probably all be there. I have one son, no grandchildren, so I get to be a sort of vicarious grandparent through her.
