Former USS Kitty Hawk to go to dry dock in 2021 to avoid scraping its hull in Puget Sound

BREMERTON — The hull of the former USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier will be scraped in a Puget Sound Naval Shipyard dry dock in the spring in preparation for its departure from Sinclair Inlet and eventual dismantling.

Under a legal settlement forged with the Suquamish Tribe, the state Attorney General, and environmental groups, the Navy cannot clean the carrier's hull in Sinclair Inlet for the next decade and is required to pull it into the dock so that what is removed avoids falling into Puget Sound.

The Navy will clean ex-Kitty Hawk's old hull to ensure that any marine life growing on its undersides — which could be invasive species when introduced in other waters of the world — won't come with it.

And where will Kitty Hawk go to be taken apart? That's still uncertain. This summer, the Navy requested proposals from contractors to both tow and dismantle the old ship. An award has not yet been announced.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Kitty_Hawk_riot

The USS Kitty Hawk riot was a racial conflict between white and black sailors aboard the United States Navy aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk on the night of October 12/13, 1972, while positioned at Yankee Station off the coast of North Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

We're still a racist society. And this might be a place to have an Institute on the Elimination of Racism.
