Biden's budget includes $331M for regional transit projects
President Joe Biden's proposed fiscal year 2022 budget includes $330.8 million across four projects in the Puget Sound region, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced recently. The projects are included in the Federal Transit Administration's Capital Investment Grant (CIG) program.
Of the $330.8 million, $55.6 million is earmarked for a bus project in southern King County, while another $75.2 million is earmarked for a bus project in Pierce County. The budget also sets aside $100 million each for the Federal Way Link and the Lynnwood Link light rail extension projects.
Across the country, communities are seeking to expand public transit as a way to create economic opportunity, improve safety, advance equity, reduce congestion and pollution, and lower the cost of living for their residents, Buttigieg said in a statement. These capital projects will improve life in 25 communities and are the start of what we hope will be a once-in-a-generation investment to modernize and expand public transit across the country.
The $55.6 million would go toward the RapidRide I Line bus extension project, which will connect the cities of Kent, Renton and Auburn. According to the FTA, the project includes 23 diesel electric hybrid buses and 1.95 miles of transit-only lanes. The $75.2 million in Pierce County, meanwhile, would go to the Pacific Avenue/Highway 7 bus project, which would add 14.3 miles of bus service between Tacoma and Spanaway. The project calls for 17 vehicles.
