30% of Mt Rainier's snowpack melted off during historic heatwave

While outside his home in Buckley the other day, Jack Deconinck-Smith says he heard it at around 12:30 in the morning.

"You could really hear the boom resonate," he said.

He says he has a clear view of Mt. Rainier from his house and says he began hearing massive pieces of snow start to slide.

"We couldn't see the details but you could hear the noise for sure," said Deconinck-Smith.

It's the noise of snowpack, that reached record numbers on the mountain, melting away in just a few days thanks to those scorching temperatures at the end of June.

Paradise will still snow covered after the heatwave, as was most of Sunrise.

Mowich lake access is still closed because the road is still covered in snow.

Thank goodness Mt. Rainier had extremely good snowfall last winter.
