Plan ahead: Seattle's Montlake Bridge to close Thursday evening ahead of month-long closure

Seattle drivers traveling between the University District and Montlake will experience an overnight closure this week ahead of a 26-day closure beginning next month.

Earlier in the spring, the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced plans to rehabilitate the 97-year-old state Route 513 Montlake Bridge this fall, extending the aging bridge's lifespan. However, the work will require the bridge to be fully closure to vehicle traffic for much of August.

The bridge will close overnight on July 29 as crews set up containment systems for the rehabilitation. The rest of the project will occur in two phases. The first phase — from Aug. 9 to Sept. 3 — will involve replacing 84 panels of the bridge's metal bridge deck, which was done more than 20 years ago. Crews will also replace two expansion joints during that time.

While vehicle traffic will be rerouted to state Route 520 and Interstate 5 during this construction phase, pedestrians and bikers will still be able to use the bridge. Maritime access will be maintained during this time, but only one side of the bridge will open for boat traffic.
