With the eviction moratorium's expiration, Snohomish County renters are reporting major price hikes.

LAKE STEVENS — Last Sunday, Christine Alcaraz received an alarming email from her landlord. If Alcaraz and her family want to extend their lease, rent will increase $475 per month.

“With the snap of a finger, we’re facing housing uncertainty,” said Alcaraz, who lives in a three-bedroom townhouse with her husband and three children in Lake Stevens.

Tenants all over Snohomish County are receiving similar notices. After more than a year of restrictions under the state’s eviction moratorium, landlords are no longer prohibited from raising rent.

The Daily Herald reached out to readers through a social media post last week to ask about rent increases. Dozens of people shared their tales of sticker shock. They reported rent increases that ranged from $200 to almost $500 per month. Landlords, however, say they are recouping losses from the pandemic.

And, I mean no offense, but for someone who has never owned more than a $800 car in his entire life... referring to one who owns actual property (in some cases more than one) as a 'little guy' is very humorous. Also, just how is it that only people with money are 'good people'? Very humorous indeed.

and, you are being jerk. like you mean to be.

i have 2 bldgs. 3 units. that's all i have to live on. i could have put my money in something easy, but i love my city, my hood, and that's what i invested in.
i took wrecks, dumped a lot of money into them, and now they are very good housing.

i'm lucky, but i also worked hard.

check your assumptions.

With landlords not able to get rent from some tenants, not surprised they would raise them on those who are able to pay.

My son's rent on his apt is going up $300 in November. He is living in an older apt that is absolutely nothing to write home about.
He has stayed employed and paid his rent on time throughout this insanity but I don't think he can absorb such a dramatic increase.

Not sure what is going to happen when people start getting priced out of the market and have no where to go.
Here, even a loft apt can be $1,800 to $2000/month.

Its insanity.
