With Cuomo's resignation, WA's Jay Inslee is poised to be the longest-serving state governor in US
On Tuesday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he will resign at the end of the month. When that happens, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee will be the longest-serving state governor currently in office in the U.S.
The states 22nd governor since Washington joined the Union in 1889, Inslee began his first term in 2013 after narrowly defeating former state Attorney General Rob McKenna in the 2012 gubernatorial election. He was elected to a third term last year, making him only the second governor in the states history to serve more than two consecutive terms in office.
A spokesperson for Inslee said he was traveling and wasnt available for comment, but added this at the end of her email: He has always said it is a tremendous honor being governor and it is the best job in the world. He loves this state and its people and is very happy to be serving in this role.
He must, because Thursday marks day 3,134 of his tenure. Only Arthur B. Langlie and Dan Evans have spent more time as Washingtons governor. Langlie, the states 12th governor, served one term between 1941 and 1945 and then another two terms between 1949 and 1957. Evans, the states 15th governor, served three consecutive terms between 1965 and 1977.
