Washington's eviction and utility payment moratoriums end on Sept. 30. Here's what you need to know

Washington’s utility payment moratorium and its so-called “bridge proclamation” — an order that replaced the state’s eviction moratorium — are both set to expire on Sept. 30, bringing an end to two pandemic-era protections meant to offset the financial burdens begot by COVID-19.

Here’s what Washington residents need to know before the end of the month.

What is the bridge proclamation?

It’s what replaced the state’s moratorium on evictions. Gov. Jay Inslee issued the proclamation in late June.

The proclamation helped protect tenants from being evicted for any defaulted rent payments between Feb. 29, 2020 and July 31, 2021. A landlord could only start the eviction process for missed payments between those dates if there was a rental assistance program and an eviction resolution program in place in the county in which the tenant lived.
