Africatown buys full block in Central District for men's shelter
Seattle anti-displacement group Africatown Community Land Trust paid $13.84 million for a Central District block where Mary's Place briefly operated a shelter last year.
King County on Tuesday posted the sales affidavit. The seller was Bellevue-based Shelter Holdings, which had acquired the property at 1601 E. Yesler Way for $11 million and planned to develop a 285-unit mixed-use apartment on property.
In July 2020, as social justice protests roiled Seattle and the nation, a Black-led consortium demanded that Shelter Holdings transfer the lease of the property to the group. The property is where the Keiro Rehabilitation and Care Center served the Japanese American community. Shelter put its development plan on hold to explore to a community-based group.
Africatown Community Land Trust (ACLT) plans to ultimately develop around 285 units of affordable housing on the block. "We're looking at a two- to three-year pre-development period," Africatown President and CEO K. Wyking Garrett said in an interview.
