Seattle mayoral candidates attract major donors as Election Day nears
Between their individual campaigns and the independent expenditure committees backing them, a total of nearly $4.26 million has been raised for Seattle mayoral candidates M. Lorena González and Bruce Harrell.
That's $1.7 million more than the amount raised in the 2017 election when Jenny Durkan significantly outraised Cary Moon and won the race with 56% of the vote. Durkan has endured a tumultuous term in office and decided not to seek a second term. A poll of likely 2021 city voters found a majority felt things had gotten "pretty seriously off on the wrong track."
The fundraising by the candidates is closer this time. A week before the Nov. 2 election, the Harrell campaign has taken in just over $1 million to González's nearly $914,500.
Among the notable donors to former City Council President Harrell's campaign are Tim Leiweke, CEO of Oak View Group, which led the $1 billion-plus Climate Pledge Arena project, and his brother Tod Leiweke, president and CEO of the Seattle Kraken. The Kraken played their inaugural home opener in the arena Saturday. The Leiwekes contributed $550 each to Harrell.
