1 to 3 inches of snow possible across Western Washington this weekend

Last edited Fri Dec 24, 2021, 09:00 PM - Edit history (1)

The best bet for accumulating snow across most of Western Washington will be Saturday night and Sunday, but some areas of the North Sound have already had snowfall.

There have been a few spots with wet snow mixed in and in heavier showers on Friday morning, and more could fall, as seen in Whatcom and Skagit counties. The snow level will be around 1,000 feet overall, but will fall Friday night. Most of us will just see scattered rain showers with temperatures getting into the low-40s.

SNOW FORECAST

Friday afternoon and evening, north wind will increase in Whatcom County and the Fraser River outflow will begin. This will increase our chance of snow in Whatcom County and closer to the Canadian border, along with upslope snow in the Port Angeles area.

That north wind could interact with the south wind in place over the rest of the area and produce a convergence zone.

Snow, single digits in the forecast for Everett

EVERETT — Authorities are urging people to plan ahead, as Arctic winds will soon bring unusually frigid temperatures and snow to Western Washington.

On Saturday, rain could turn into a rain-snow mix, then into snow in the evening.

After that, conditions should be drier, and chances for extra snow should be minimal. But starting Sunday, it may not get above freezing for several days, with some spots possibly seeing single digit temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.

Another system could move through toward the end of next week, bringing with it more moisture, and another potential round of snow.

Snow expected for Seattle over holiday weekend

A cold front is expected to bring small amounts of lowland snow throughout the region this weekend, meaning Seattle could be in for a slightly white Christmas this year.

The National Weather Service in Seattle is predicting between 1 and 3 inches of snowfall from Saturday to Monday. However, meteorologists say snowfall amounts aren’t expected to exceed a quarter-of-an-inch during a single 6-hour block over that period, meaning it's possible we won’t see much accumulation on the ground.

"For those wanting snow, Saturday night through Monday appears more promising right now, though subject to change of course," the weather service wrote in its Wednesday forecast discussion. "If temps are cold enough and snow can materialize, a few inches of accumulation seems like a reasonable outcome."

Most of the snowfall will likely come late in the weekend when temperatures are expected to remain below freezing. Highs will be in the low 40s on Saturday during the day, but daytime temperatures are expected to drop to the low 30s Sunday and remain there through Monday. Nighttime lows could range between 10 and 20 degrees.

6 Inches Of Snow Possible By Monday: Puget Sound Forecast

SEATTLE — The forecast is shaping up nicely for a snowy Christmas weekend, with the latest forecast models showing good odds for a few inches to fall across Puget Soun through Monday evening. The National Weather Service shared updated projections on Christmas Eve, highlighting a most likely scenario for 6 inches of snow around Seattle, Bellevue and Tacoma over three days.

Due to the nature of the incoming weather system, confidence in specific snow totals is still relatively low and could vary considerably between communities.

For timing, forecasters still see Christmas evening as likely to mark the transition from rain to snow, with accumulations becoming more likely through Sunday. Currently, the National Weather Service expects any snowfall will occur "within waves of light precipitation," but forecasters are not ruling out the potential for heavier bands or a convergence zone developing, which could boost snow totals for some communities.

Monday will mark the beginning of a prolonged period of unusually frigid temperatures for Western Washington, bringing Puget Sound its coldest air of the season so far and possibly its lowest temperatures in more than a decade. Forecasters expect highs will struggle to escape the 20s throughout next week, with overnight temperatures dipping into the teens or lower.
