Seattle ends Covid-era hazard pay for grocery workers

Grocery workers in Seattle will no longer receive hazard pay under a bill the City Council passed, 5-2, Tuesday.

The move comes 18 months after the city enacted an ordinance requiring large grocery companies to pay workers an additional $4 an hour during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With Mayor Bruce Harrell signing the bill Wednesday, hazard pay will end in 30 days. By then, a new labor contract will be in effect with represented workers receiving raises of $4 to $9 a hour, according to Councilmember Tami Morales.

"I am glad to know that represented workers will be getting the wages they deserve," said Morales, who added it's her understanding that the raises are permanent. "I think that's the key impetus behind this legislation."
