Housing in Seattle's manufacturing centers possible under latest city plan

The city of Seattle has undertaken so many reviews of zoning changes in industrial areas that they've lost track at City Hall.

"I think this is our third or fourth actual somewhat formal review of industrial lands," Tim Burgess, who is Mayor Bruce Harrell's director of strategic initiatives, said this spring.

So it's notable that the city Office of Planning and Community Development on Thursday announced the completion of an environmental study of land use changes affecting neighborhoods from Ballard to South Park.

The final environmental impact statement's preferred alternative has three new zones, including one to accommodate multistory buildings as well as some retail and even housing in and retail uses near and manufacturing and industrial centers (MICs).
