2. Car sharing panel in Seattle 1/10
Thu Dec 26, 2013, 02:35 AM
Dec 2013

Friday January 10, 2014
12 - 1 PM
WHERE
Room 126
King County Chinook Building
401 5th Ave., Seattle

Seattle is no stranger to car sharing; most of us have seen snappy Car2Go Smart cars and sleek Zipcar sedans zooming around town. At the same time, our region has also been dipping its toes into personal vehicle sharing, where car owners can rent out their own vehicles by the hour or the day.

Each of these car sharing services does a great job of getting people from point A to point B in its own unique way, all while helping reduce the overall number of cars on the road. For these reasons, car sharing has proven itself to be invaluable component of the full suite of transportation options in Seattle.

Whether you're already a car sharing pro or have yet to take the plunge, join us at our next Friday Forum. We'll be talking about how different models can meet different needs, and what's in store for car sharing in Seattle -- from exciting innovations to entirely new models.

Our expert panelists include Ann Sutphin from SDOT and representatives from the carsharing companies that do business in our region.

Hope to see you on January 10th!

Director of Programs

Notes A passionate argument on behalf of the middle class, this film features Robert Reich-professor, best-selling author, and Clinton cabinet member-as he demonstrates how the widening income gap has a devastating impact on the American economy. The film is an intimate portrait of a man who's overcome a great deal of personal adversity and whose lifelong goal remains protecting those who are unable to protect themselves. Through his singular perspective, Reich explains how the massive consolidation of wealth by a precious few threatens the viability of the American workforce and the foundation of democracy itself. In this INCONVENIENT TRUTH for the economy, Reich uses humor and a wide array of facts to explain how the issue of economic inequality affects each and every one of us.

6. Support Darigold Workers! 1/16 in Seattle
Tue Jan 14, 2014, 03:22 AM
Jan 2014

NOON, THURS JAN 16, Support Darigold Workers!
Darigold’s headquarters, 1130 Rainier Ave. in Seattle

From United Farmworkers of America (UFW): Join dozens of farm workers, Farm to Family Coalition members, and supporters who will hold a solidarity rally at Darigold’s corporate office in Seattle demanding that the company take immediate steps to remedy the abuses being reported at the dairies that supply Darigold’s milk. Dairy workers have been demanding that Darigold listen to their concerns since 2011, but the company refuses to meet with them or take any action to stop the ongoing abuse of workers. A vast majority of workers signed union representation cards at one of Darigold’s supplier dairies, Ruby Ridge. Darigold closed the doors on Ruby Ridge dairy workers when the workers visited the Portland plant, and the company refused to meet with the workers when they visited the Seattle headquarters. Since then, workers have come forward from Darigold dairies across the Pacific Northwest describing conditions similar to those experienced at Ruby Ridge. These conditions include wage theft, unsanitary restrooms, lack of rest or lunch breaks, lack of water, and mistreatment, to mention a few. Margarito Martinez summarizes the working conditions at Ruby Ridge Dairy, “We work 12 to 14 hours a day without lunch or rest breaks and without water. On top of that they steal our wages. We’ve been fighting for four years and nothing changes.”

You will leave with a better understanding of what gets in the way when we talk about health care reform and other issues, and what we can do better, whether talking to friends and family, lawmakers or press.

Many of us understand important issues in terms of numbers and graphs. These speak to us, yet facts and figures don't seem to get us where we are trying to go when talking outside our circles. You will find out why that is and what we can do differently. You will have a chance to craft your own narrative, which gives us all the power to move our issues forward together.

11. Special Meeting of the King County Council on funding Metro
Wed Jan 29, 2014, 09:26 AM
Jan 2014

I wish to advise you of a proposal under consideration for funding Metro Transit service and local road and transportation infrastructure in King County.

The King County Council is currently considering proposed legislation that would form a Transportation Benefit District in order to place a local transportation funding measure on the April 2014 ballot. The proposed measure would generate approximately $130 million annually from two revenue sources: a $60 annual vehicle fee and 0.1% increase in sales tax. A separate proposal calls for adoption of a scheduled fare increase of 25 cents for 2015 and the first-ever reduced fare for low income riders.

A public hearing will be held on this proposed legislation, and you are invited to attend and provide testimony to King County Councilmembers. Please feel free to share this information with others in your community who may be interested in participating in the public process. Details below:

Public Hearing on Proposed Ordinances 2013-0526 & 2013-0527
Tuesday, February 4, 2014, 6:00 pm*

*Sign-in begins at 5:30 pm
Union Station, Ruth Fisher Board Room
401 South Jackson Street
Seattle, WA 98104

As background information, in order to maintain existing levels of service Metro Transit needs up to $75 million annually in additional revenue. King County will be required to cut up to 600,000 annual transit service hours beginning later this year if new revenue is not established. Metro Transit has released a preliminary look at how those cuts would potentially be distributed using adopted service guideline policies.

Thank you again for your interest. I appreciate the opportunity to provide this update.

Sincerely,

Larry Phillips, Chair

I am opening the selection of books for the Capitol Hill Progressive Book Club to any that you want to share about or you can just talk about the designated choice "The Crash of 2016" by Thom Hartmann. Bring friends to affirm Thom Hartmanns belief "democracy begins when you show up-tag your it". Capitol Hill Library Meeting Room

The State of democracy
The social safety net will not survive or will there be any real social justice until fair minded people put there petty differences aside, vote as a block to push out the obstructionists and regain control of local & national governments. The 2014 election is a turning point for egalitarian democracy. If fair-minded people lose the Senate this November we may never get in back. What to do in? In short, involve yourself in the political process, form coalitions and salvage the democratic party.

18. "Shift Change" to be shown in Seattle 3/13
Sat Feb 22, 2014, 09:52 AM
Feb 2014

We finally have a firm Date for the Showing of the documentary, Shift Change - It will be THURSDAY MARCH 13TH, 7 PM TO 9 PM AT THE University Temple Methodist Church in the U-district. I've attached the flyer. Hope to see many DSA'ers in the audience. As the flyer says, Mark and Melissa are planning on attending.

In other news, I attended a meeting of WAmend, the group sponsoring a initiative to the legislature requesting they join 16 other states in calling for a Constitutional admendment stating that;

1.The rights listed in the US Constitution are the rights of natural persons only.

2.Federal, state and local governments may regulate contributions and expenditures.

3.They must be promptly disclosed to the public.

It's Initiative 1329 and we have only until June 30th to collect 350,000 signatures. In this month"s mailing, I will be sending out more information, such as how to contact the WAmend people in your area. It would a real victory if DSA in Washington state could collect several thousand signatures.

In the Seattle area, we need to get move involved in the 15NOW Campaign. If you can take part in one of their demonstrations or volunteer to work in your local area, just logon to their website 15NOW.org for more information. And tell them your from DSA Puget Sound. If you don't live in Seattle, check around to see if there are any stirrings if your area for an increase in the minimum wage. Better yet start one! In the mean time, contact your local representative and tell Him or Her you support a living wage.

In DSA National goings on, The National Office has sent out a request that members who can afford to donate to DSA on a monthly basis. You can donation a little as $3 per month. You can also choose a monthly donation as a way to cover your membership dues. However, if you want to do that, you will need to contact the national office. The purpose of collecting donations this way is to help get a grant money.

Finally, as you all may or may not know, DSA National office offers free online Webinars on subjects relevant to DSA organizing and chapter building. They usually take place on Monday's. The next one is March 3rd on Fund Raising: Paying of the Revolution. I've taken part in several of these webinars and they are very enlightening and fun. We need to have at least one person take part in them each month. Go to the website for more info dsausa.org or get me shout out.

With all that said, my main purpose for this email to get some of you to turn out to the Shift Change showing. This event has our name on it and we would love a good turnout.

When I first joined DSA, I knew it was going to be hard re-building a chapter here in the northwest. And while I'm not the best organizer, if fact I'm a terrible organizer, I do believe that the time has come for a democratic socialist presence in the area. I realize Socialist Alternative (SA) is already well organized and doing some great work. We should join them on those issues were we both agreed of the need for action. (15NOW) While they have had a profound effect on the local conversation with regards to working people, they don't have the national reach that DSA enjoys. We need to build DSA into an organization that, when in coalition with SA and the Green Party of Seattle, can make a difference in the lives of working people all over Puget Sound. Won't you join me in that endeavor?

WE SHALL OVERCOME,

Bill Yates

20. Protest Harborview cuts in Seattle 2/27
Mon Feb 24, 2014, 09:58 AM
Feb 2014

There will be a short demonstration at Harborview Feb 27th from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.? As you probably know the UW Health/ Harborview announced its plan to close its Women's, Pediatric, Family and Adult Care Clinics. Washington Community Action Network, along with PSARA and more than 10 other community groups, wrote a letter to the UW Health/Harborview Leadership calling on them to continue operations in all Harborview clinics and to further expand its presence in underserved South Seattle and South King County areas.

Psara members will be meeting with other members of this coalition Thursday morning (February 27) to help build a visible presence of concerned community members and keep the pressure on Harborview to protect services, not cut clinics. We will be meeting at 9th & Jefferson at 10:30am, and the action will last less than an hour.

23. PROTEST CALLED OFF!!!
Thu Feb 27, 2014, 02:00 AM
Feb 2014

Tomorrow's rally regarding the potential changes to HMC primary care clinics has been cancelled.

HMC staff, the community organizations that sent the sign-on letter to the HMC Board, PNHPWW, and others received the following statement this afternoon:

This is being sent on behalf of Johnese Spisso, Chief Health System Officer, UW Medicine & Interim Executive Director, Harborview and Dr. Rick Goss, Harborview Medical Director

Dear Dr. David McLanahan and members of PNHPWW,

We are writing to again confirm that Harborview Medical Center is not closing or relocating any of the existing Harborview primary care clinics.

We continue our unwavering commitment to serving all patients at Harborview, regardless of their ability to pay. We ask that you help us in delivering accurate information so our patients and our community partners know that there are no changes planned to the primary care clinics at Harborview.

We appreciate your advocacy and support to our patients.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email us.

It appears they finally understood the need to make a clear statement, on the record, that the clinics would not be closed or moved. This is a victory made possible by collaboration amongst those committed to protect the underserved and public community resources. It bodes well for us as we continue to work for the same level of high quality health care for all of our residents.

Another bit of great news - Ralph Nader has agreed to be the keynote speaker for our PNHPWW Annual Public Meeting scheduled for Saturday, July 18th at UW Kane Hall. Kshama Sawant will also speak. The rest of the program is a work in progress.

David McLanahan
Coordinator, PNHPWW

Testing in Public Schools: Tacoma 3/1

For decades, standardized testing has been a part of public education. Within the last ten years, however, the testing has taken on a more important, and possibly more damaging, role. Test scores, mistakenly viewed as effective assessments of student ability and teacher/school effectiveness, are anything but. This film sheds light on the invalid nature of these tests, the terrible consequences of high-stakes testing, and the big money that’s involved.

What: Screening of the film Standardized followed by discussion with Wayne Au, author of Pencils Down: Rethinking High Stakes Testing and Accountability in Public Schools.

When: Sat. March 1 at 2:00 p.m.
Where: Tahoma Room, Commencement Hall, the University of Puget Sound.
Sponsored by Washington Badass Teacher Association (WA-BAT) and Parents and Friends of Tacoma Public Schools (PFTPS).

30. Public meeting on hazard mitigation in Seattle 4/8/14
Wed Mar 26, 2014, 04:58 AM
Mar 2014

As we’ve seen in our region and nationally, disasters can and do happen to us. Now is the time to let City officials know your thoughts! See attached brochure and news release for more.

Are you more concerned about a major earthquake or a winter storm? A tsunami or local flooding? A nuclear reactor meltdown or a traffic accident where hazardous materials are released? All of the above? In the Pacific Northwest, we face 18 different hazards both natural and man-made. The City is responsible for developing a plan to reduce risks, but needs help to develop a process that allows us to work together to reduce the impact and keep ourselves and our property safe. We need your help to create a plan that takes into account all of our needs and resources.

It is through our Hazard Mitigation Plan that we outline how we will reduce our vulnerability to the impacts of these disasters. This could include things like:

•Stabilizing slopes to prevent landslides.
•Evaluating buildings and strengthening them to allow them to withstand earthquakes.
•Identifying areas in the city that flood during heavy rains and improve drainage.
•Teaching families and neighborhoods how to protect their homes and families from the impacts of disaster.

The existing plan is being updated as part of the City’s emergency management program. For more information or to review Seattle’s existing plan please visit: www.seattle.gov/emergency/prepare/mitigation/.

How can you help?
Our plan is only as good as the input we get. That means we need to hear from you! Please complete our Disaster Mitigation Survey (it will only take 5 minutes) by April 23, or attend our public meeting (details below). Surveys can be:

§ Submitted in-person at our upcoming public meeting:

When: April 8, 2014 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Where: Rainier Community Center

4600 38th Avenue South

Seattle, WA 98118

Details: There will be a presentation at 7 p.m., family friendly booths and refreshments. Interpretation and accommodations are available upon advance request to Donna Voss, Project Manager, at 206-233-5089, or by email at: HazardMitigationPlanUpdate@seattle.gov.

§ Emailed to HazardMitigationPlanUpdate@seattle.gov
§ Filled out online at www.surveymonkey.com/s/SeaHazMitSurvey
§ Mailed to Mitigation Plan Update, Project Manager

Seattle Office of Emergency Management
105 5th Ave. South, Suite 300
Seattle, WA 98104

Thank you!

OEM appreciates your participation! As partners in updating the Hazard Mitigation Plan, we can think through and better prepare for the hazards we face together.

31. Can Surveillance Technologies Be Tamed? Forum in Seattle 5/3
Fri Mar 28, 2014, 06:25 AM
Mar 2014

Hi everyone! Below is an invitation to our InspireSeattle Social on Saturday evening May 3rd at 6:30PM at Dave and Shamah Gamrath’s place. We have scored again and have a great speaker: Doug Klunder to discuss surveillance technologies. SAVE THE DATE!

Remember – IT’S A POTLUCK!!

Come join us! www.inspireseattle.org

InspireSeattle

Invites YOU to join us at our Social Forum: Saturday, May 3rd at 6:30PM.

Main discussion topic for this evening:

Can Surveillance Technologies Be Tamed?

Video surveillance cameras are far different from the technology of a few decades ago. They now allow remote control, with pan, tilt, and zoom features; the images obtained are digital, and can be combined with other technologies such as facial recognition, or optical character recognition. Drones are rapidly becoming available at low cost, in a variety of sizes—potentially allowing video, thermal imaging, and other sensing mechanisms to be routinely deployed in the air, perhaps unknown to people below. Automatic license plate readers have the capability to detect (and store in a geocoded, time-stamped manner) thousands of plates every hour. Cell phones can be used to track the movements of individuals. All of these technologies both have significant benefits and pose significant risks to privacy. This talk will examine these types of technologies, and discuss methods that can be used to minimize the risks while maintaining the benefits.

Please join us for this important discussion!

Guest Speaker:

Doug Klunder is Privacy Counsel at the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington. His original training is in Computer Science. He spent over 10 years in software development at Microsoft, where he was the lead developer for the first versions of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Money. He then shifted careers and received a J.D. degree from the University of Washington School of Law in 2002. He combines his technology and legal backgrounds in work on privacy issues for the ACLU. He concentrates on informational privacy (e.g., public records, data mining) and technological threats to privacy (e.g., biometrics and surveillance), as well as traditional constitutional search and seizure issues. Work includes legislative and rulemaking analysis and advocacy, litigation and other legal advocacy, and public education.
Come join us for what should be a very important and interesting evening!!!

34. Striking Hong Kong Dockworkers Speak on Globalization, Subcontracting--Seattle 4/10
Fri Apr 4, 2014, 05:26 AM
Apr 2014

THURS APR 10, @ 7:30pm All on the Same Ocean: Striking Hong Kong Dockworkers Speak on Globalization, Subcontracting, and International Solidarity Location: International District/Chinatown Community Center (719 8th Ave S, Seattle 98104). In 2013, dockworkers in Hong Kong went on strike for 40 days against the subcontracting companies demanding better pay and working conditions. It was the longest running industrial action in Hong Kong in years. The strike relied on a huge base of community support, including students and young people, and held major occupation of the port and public space downtown. Striking workers were able to raise a strike fund estimated at USD$800,000. Even though the workers are from a minority union, the 40-day strike won increased wages for everyone on the docks. Hong Kong workers are now organizing a union for all port workers, including truckers, crane operators, longshore workers, checkers, and others. Right now, two workers from the action are on a national tour of the United States to share their experiences and build international solidarity across the Pacific Ocean. Come welcome them and participate!

39. Washington concert tour honoring Pete Seeger. FREE performances.

Apr 2014

The Legacy of Pete Seeger

PSARA is helping to co-sponsor renowned labor singer Anne Feeney and writer-folk troubadour Evan Greer as their "Carry It On" Tour, a multigenerational activist music singalong honoring the legacy of Pete Seeger, arrives in Washington state.

The tour opens tonight in Olympia at the Washington State Labor Council's building at 9th and Columbia, with subsequent stops in Aberdeen, Port Angeles, Bellingham, Everett, Seattle and Tacoma (schedule below).

The rabble-rousing spirit of beloved protest singer Pete Seeger lives on, and Anne Feeney and Evan Greer are out to prove it. Audiences who attend the Carry it On tour will learn to expect the unexpected during high-energy concerts that feature music ranging from Irish ballads to union singalongs to political punk anthems.

Greer and Feeney have both shared stages multiple times with Pete Seeger. Together they will carry on Pete's legacy - harnessing the power of music for revolutionary social change, and making it irresistible for audiences to join in and sing along.

Feeney and Greer bring their Carry It On tour to the following Washington venues:

Wednesday, April 16 in OLYMPIA - At 7 p.m. at the WSLC/WFSE's Davis-Williams Building, 906 S. Columbia St. Admission: donations will be accepted.

Thursday, April 17 in ABERDEEN - At 7 p.m. at the Polish Club Hall, 823 W. First St. Admission: $10+ suggested donation. Presented by Grays Harbor Institute.

Saturday, April 19 in PORT ANGELES - At 6 p.m. at the Clallam County Democratic HQ, 124-A West First St., Admission: $15-25 suggested but no one turned away.

Monday, April 28 in BELLINGHAM - At 7:30 p.m. at Union Center, 1700 N. State St. (upstairs), Admission: $10-20 sliding scale donation. (Anne and Evan will also be performing at noon that day at the Northwest Washington State Labor Council's annual Worker Memorial Day commemoration on the lawn of the Bellingham Public Library.)

Tuesday, April 29 in EVERETT - At 7 p.m. at the Firewheel Community Coffeehouse, 2727 Colby Ave. Just announced! Check EvanGreer.org for details.

Wednesday, April 30 in SEATTLE - At 7 p.m. in Hall 1 of the Labor Temple, 2800 1st Ave. Admission is FREE thanks to the following sponsoring organizations (although donations will be accepted to benefit local organizing for affordable and accessible health care): Health Care is a Human Right (HCHR-WA); Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO; SEIU HealthCare 1199NW; Physicians for a National Health Program, Western Washington; Puget Sound Advocates for Retirement Action; United for Single Payer; and Health Care for All. Download and distribute the event flier.

Thursday, May 1 in TACOMA - Time/details to be announced for this May Day show at UW Tacoma's Carwein Hall. Check EvanGreer.org.

Based in Pittsburgh, Anne Feeney is the granddaughter of an intrepid mineworkers' organizer, who also used music to carry the message of solidarity to working people. After two decades of community activism and regional performances at rallies, Anne took her message on the road. Since 1991 Anne has traveled to the frontlines in 42 states, as well as Canada, Mexico, Denmark, Ireland and Sweden. Her anthem "Have You Been to Jail for Justice?" is being performed by activists everywhere, and was recorded twice by Peter, Paul and Mary. Dubbed the "minister of culture" to the movements for economic and social justice and human rights, Anne is "the best labor singer in North America" according to Utah Phillips, and Pete Seeger himself has congratulated on her "fine songwriting." Anne has played for crowds of thousands and shared the stage with legends like Utah Phillips, Peggy Seeger, Dan Bern, Billy Bragg, Peter, Paul & Mary, and of course, Pete Seeger.

Evan Greer is an LGBTQ parent, organizer, and multi-instrumentalist who writes fearless and dangerously catchy original songs that inspire hope and incite resistance. Equally at home leading singalongs in a union hall or sweating at a basement punk show, Evan has developed a cult following across North America and Europe, and has had songs featured on NPR, in college courses and major independent films. At 28 years old, Evan tours internationally as a musician and facilitates workshops and trainings to support movements for justice and liberation. Howard Zinn called Greer "an eloquent and energetic writer," who "reminds me of Phil Ochs." Evan has shared stages with artists as musically diverse as Billy Bragg, Immortal Technique, Gil Scott Heron's Midnight Band, Holly Near, Against Me!, The Coup, Pamela Means, State Radio, Hurray for the Riff Raff, and Chumbawamba. Tom Morello, guitarist of Rage Against the Machine writes, "Evan Greer continues to write inspiring folk music in the tradition of the great protest singers ... a heck of a guitar player."

50. FUN protest. Guerilla lighting against the TPP; 5/6 in Seattle and Olympia
Sun May 4, 2014, 04:51 AM
May 2014

I wanted to send a recruitment out for the two Stop the Secrecy events in Washington State, one in Seattle, and the other in Olympia, both light projection events meant to shine a spotlight on the TPP, and the legislative and media secrecy associated with it. You probably know Wednesday the 7th, our anti-TPP delegation and protest will be in Washington to target our legislators letting them know their constituents are dead set against this horrible deal. Can you please come out to show your solidarity? Be sure you scroll down to click on the link for the event you want to attend, based on your geographical location. Once you click on the link, you'll see the address and the sign-up field. Let's make these events memorable.

Shine a light on the Secrecy -- Guerrilla light projections to protest the TPP Media Blackout

Seattle (meet in International District)
06 May , 07:00 PM
Why has there been so much silence and secrecy regarding the Trans-Pacific Partnership or TPP? Media and negotiators know that, if the public were to see the full text of this alarming agreement, it would be soundly defeated. If they won't tell the story, we will! On March 6, in key areas of Washington State, groups will be gathering to project messages in light on prominent buildings, directing citizens to where they can find out about TPP and take action locally. Want to learn more about how to use light projections as protest? Want to come out and take pictures to share in your networks? Just want to join in the fun? Come stand up for transparency and all we have fought for over the years by ending this insidious secrecy!
Status: Public, open for RSVP, 0 Guests (Max 12)

51. Transportation talk on "Rebirth of American Urbanism" in Seattle 5/7
Sun May 4, 2014, 08:25 PM
May 2014

Don't forget to join us Wednesday for a discussion with Ben Ross, author of Dead End: Suburban Sprawl and the Rebirth of American Urbanism.

WHEN
Wednesday, May 7, 2014
12 - 1 PM
WHERE
Downtown Seattle YMCA
909 4th Ave, Rm 123

Once idealized as safe, green, orderly retreats where hardworking members of the middle class could raise their children away from the city, suburbs are now synonymous with sprawl, strip malls, and reliance on the single-occupancy-vehicle commute.

In his new book, author Benjamin Ross explores the historical, sociological and economic factors behind this shift, finding that sprawl is much more than bad architecture and sloppy planning.

Join TCC and the author for a discussion of suburbia and how we can learn from the past to lay out a practical and compelling strategy for change.

Hope to see you!

56. 5/9 demonstration against military bureaucracy on Whidey Island
Tue May 6, 2014, 04:25 AM
May 2014

IT’S TIME FOR ACTION!
Stand With US on May 9th!

We’re organizing a VIGIL at the entrance of OLF
Coupeville, Friday, May 9th from 1pm to 3pm

WE WANT YOU! 200 citizens WANTED to defend Whidbey Island and to defend our Island community culture that knows how to care about each other – as has been our way.

Our civilian Island culture is in jeopardy from a growing military bureaucracy that has no restrictions – except the voice of the people. It is time for people to say ENOUGH! The Growlers are a poor fit for Whidbey Island & Puget Sound. The Navy has many alternatives for flight training locations!

OUR VIGIL WILL PROTEST…

• The harm being done to us from the Growler’s noise
• The cardiac, hypertension and post-traumatic stress caused by the Growler’s low-level flight training noise (100+ decibel)
• The one-site placement of ALL 117 EA-18G Growlers on Whidbey Island

60. Meeting on coal trains in Seattle 5/15
Sat May 10, 2014, 05:42 AM
May 2014

Thanks to your invaluable actions over the last few years we’ve kept coal exports out of Washington State.

But our fight is still far from over. Right now, coal companies like Ambre Energy are doing everything in their power to lobby politicians in the Northwest to approve their dirty coal exports projects. These projects would send millions of tons of coal down the Columbia River.

Under the leadership of Governor Inslee, our state is primed to make historic strides in the fight against climate disruption. We have the Governor on our side, but now more than ever we need your help to keep up the pressure to ensure our lawmakers keep coal out of our state.

Join us for a Beyond Coal organizing meeting to find out how you can be part of this important campaign!

Event details:

WHO: Sierra Club volunteers, staff, and YOU
WHAT: Beyond Coal Campaign volunteer meeting (Snacks and drinks provided)
WHEN: Thursday, May 15th, 2014 6:30 pm—8 pm
WHERE: Sunset Hill Community Center, 3003 NW 66th Street, Seattle, WA (map)

If you have questions please contact Robin Everett at Robin.Everett@sierraclub.org.

At this meeting you will learn the status of the fight against coal exports, the emerging work on oil and how we can help Governor Inslee realize his clean energy vision for Washington.

We will also have local volunteers showcasing the exciting opportunities to get engaged, such as our summer tabling program, upcoming events, how to get a coal/oil presenter at your local church or community group and much more.

So please join us on May 15th to ensure a clean and healthy future for Seattle.

Hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Robin Everett

Can you join us? Click here for details and to RSVP: https://actionnetwork.org/events/rally-for-clean-energy-say-no-to-kxl-oil-coal?referrer=brian-gunn-2&source=direct_link

This Day of Action against Dirty Fuels is being jointly organized by the Tar Sands Coalition and Hands Across the Sand / Hands Across the Land. This action is being organized by local activists who are part of the NoKXL Pledge of Resistance.

Together with our friends and neighbors, we'll send a strong message to President Obama and our elected officials that it's time to move beyond dirty fuels and work towards the clean energy future we need.

Starting at 11:00 am, we will march with signs and banners around the busy intersection on Auburn Way S. just south of Hwy 18. We will not block traffic or interfere with pedestrians.

Please bring your own signs! Any message opposing fossil fuels and calling for clean energy solutions is appropriate. Thank you for respecting this request and for all you do to combat climate change.

62. Coal Road to China documentary in Seattle 5/18
Sat May 17, 2014, 03:22 AM
May 2014

Thank you so much for all you have done to keep Big Coal out of our state.

We would like to invite you to a special coal export documentary film screening on Sunday, May 18th at 7:00 pm at Seattle University.

The film, “Coal Road to China,” was produced by members of MELT (Montana Elders for a Livable Tomorrow). Harold and Jan Hoem traveled to the Powder River Basin of Montana and Wyoming three times last summer to film the coal country at the center of the coal export controversy.

They interviewed ranchers, Native Americans and others who live and work near the mines. They recorded the people’s concerns about mining and the dozens of additional coal trains that would travel through their communities on their way to Pacific coal export terminals should they be built.

Those discussions led to the coal/climate connection, and the Hoems spoke with scientists, physicians, an activist from Beijing and a former Montana coal mine manager. The landscapes and the people form the story that is told in “Coal Road to China.”

The film, produced by Jan and Harold Hoem, novice film makers, is richly textured and visually exciting.

Near the end, a song, “It’s Just a Train,” provides a musical journey through the places that we’ve just seen. The song was written and performed for the film by Olympia singer-song writer John Deviny.

Please join us for this engaging film on coal and climate that is beautiful, honest and surprisingly hopeful.

WHAT: A Movie – “Coal Road to China” and panel discussion about coal export with the filmakers
WHEN: Sunday, May 18th 7:00pm – 8:30pm
WHERE: Wyckoff Auditorium, Seattle University

COST: FREE!

What: Community Forum: Strengthening women’s economic security
When: June 18, 2014, 5:30 – 7:00 p.m.
Where: Tacoma Community College - Building 11 6501, S 19th St, Tacoma, WA 98466, free parking in the main lot.

The Washington Work and Family Coalition, along with 14 local partner organizations, will host a community forum on strengthening the economic security of women and families on Wednesday before a local delegation leaves for the first-ever White House Summit on Working Families in Washington, D.C., on Monday. Workers, business owners and elected leaders will bring experiences from the fight for paid leave and equal pay.

Nearly 1 million workers in Washington don’t have access to a single paid sick day, and only 12 percent of the U.S. workforce has access to paid family leave to welcome a new child or care for an ailing parent. Washington women earn just 78 cents on every dollar – meaning they lose $10 billion in combined income annually due to the pay gap. Policies like paid sick days, family and medical leave insurance and equal pay laws will help Washington’s working women families thrive.

68. Protect Puget sound from oil tankers. Demonstrations in Bellingham and Seattle
Thu Jul 3, 2014, 02:16 AM
Jul 2014

Few aquatic environments in the U.S. can compare to Puget Sound’s natural beauty and marine resources. The Sound supports thousands of animal and plant species, from orcas and herrings to eelgrass.

But all that could change if oil giant BP gets its way.

BP is looking to expand oil tanker traffic in Puget Sound. With each new tanker, there is a new risk of an oil spill that would be devastating to the area’s marine life.

There are two hearings this month to discuss an environmental review of BP’s plans. Unfortunately, the review is sorely lacking and needs to consider other key environmental information and alternatives.

To show that you care about the health of Puget Sound, please join us and make sure your voice is heard.

Speak out against BP’s plans to make Puget Sound their tanker highway. Attend and testify at a public hearing.

When and Where:
July 16, 7-9 pm: Shuksan Middle School Gymnasium, 2717 Alderwood Ave., Bellingham, WA 98225
July 24, 7-9 pm: Federal Center S. Galaxy Room, 4735 East Marginal Way S., Seattle, WA 98134

Planning on coming? Please RSVP by sending me an email (felleman@comcast.net) to let me know you’ll be there, and I’ll send you talking points to use in your testimony.

Sincerely,
Fred Felleman,

72. Hearing on Cherry Point BP refinery in Seattle 7/16
Sat Jul 12, 2014, 02:00 AM
Jul 2014

Right now, the Army Corps of Engineers is taking public comment on a dock built at the BP Refinery at Cherry Point (scroll down for more information). The background is complicated, but our message is simple: no additional oil tankers in the Salish Sea.

You know as well as I do that increased tanker traffic means increased risk of oil spills.

Will you join us on July 16th and ask the Army Corps to protect our community and waters by limiting the oil tanker traffic at the BP refinery in Cherry Point?

When: Wednesday, July 16 from 7pm to 9 pm (public hearing) with open house from 6pm to 7pm and a public rally from 6:15-6:30 pm!
Where: Federal Center South Galaxy Room, 4735 East Marginal Way South,Seattle
Note: A valid government-issued photo identification (for example, a driver's license) will be required for entrance to the building.
RSVP here: http://tinyurl.com/nq25ofj

Background Information:

•This dock is one of the many proposed and ongoing fossil fuel facilities that threaten the Salish Sea – from the proposed coal export terminal next door at Cherry Point to the Kinder Morgan pipeline in Canada to Washington’s five refineries transporting oil by rail and tanker through Puget Sound.
•In 2001, BP built a second pier at its refinery just north of Bellingham at Cherry Point. This was done without a thorough environmental review to assess the pier’s impact and the risks to our communities and waterways.
•After a successful lawsuit filed by our friends at Ocean Advocates, Fuel Safe Washington, Audubon and RE Sources, the Army Corps of Engineers was required to prepare an environmental impact statement and a study of the vessel traffic associated with the project.
•Because of that court decision, there is now a draft environmental impact statement available for public comment.
•The second dock at BP is already being used, but BP has repeatedly said that the dock increases safety, not the amount of oil traffic that can go to the refinery.
•In 2013, BP added a rail loop, allowing the refinery to receive large quantities of oil by rail.
The draft Environmental Impact Statement recently released by the Army Corps of Engineers highlights the potential for additional oil tanker traffic coming to the facility. Unfortunately, it doesn’t include an evaluation of key changes, like the new rail loop and key safety standards, or provide a cumulative review of vessels carrying oil and coal in the Salish Sea.

We need your help to stand up for our waters, ensure that the EIS provides a thorough analysis of all the impacts of this project, and hold BP accountable to their promises to our community: no more oil tanker traffic.

Please join us on July 16th for the rally and public hearing. If you can’t attend, you can still help by submitting a comment online at http://tinyurl.com/opx6xed.

75. More on this from Involved Democracy
Sun Jul 20, 2014, 07:19 AM
Jul 2014

British Petroleum (BP) is responsible for the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Now BP wants to increase transport of oil through the environmentally sensitive Salish Sea which includes Puget Sound and the Straight of Juan de Fuca. More oil tankers can only mean one thing: the chances of a catastrophic spill here in the Northwest will be that much greater.

We have an opportunity to say 'No' to more tankers in the Salish Sea. We need you to speak out either in writing or in person. Please continue reading to learn how you can help.

The Army Corps of Engineers is taking public comment on a dock built at the BP Refinery at Cherry Point. Please join members of Involved Democracy on July 24th and ask the Corps to protect our community and waters by limiting oil tanker traffic.

73. Testify at the Seattle City Council un bus routes 7/17
Wed Jul 16, 2014, 04:50 AM
Jul 2014

Do you ride the bus in Seattle? Are you concerned that your bus might be eliminated or reduced? This might be your last chance to keep your bus.

We hope you'll join us on Thursday, July 17th at 2:00 pm to tell city council step up to save our buses.

The failure of King County Prop 1 means that bus cuts are coming to Seattle. In Seattle, 45 routes will be changed or revised. So odds are that your bus is on the chopping block. Here's the list so you can see for yourself the impacts to our community from the planned bus cuts.

The City of Seattle has the chance to put a transit only measure on the ballot in November to preserve as much Seattle bus service as possible. At TCC, we are working hard to advocate for a creative solution that keeps our buses on the streets, but this is not a done deal. The Council needs to hear from you about why keeping bus service is important to get you to work, to school, to the doctor, and to our quality of life.

Show up on Thursday to testify and make sure the City Council knows that transit is your top priority -- and it should be theirs. Urge them to put a proposal on the ballot to save service in Seattle.

We deserve a chance to save our buses. Make sure that the Council gives us that chance. Tell them to put a proposal on the ballot this November. It's our last chance.

74. Signwvaving in Seattle to raise awareness about human trafficking (remainder of summer)
Thu Jul 17, 2014, 07:08 AM
Jul 2014

As you likely know, the West Seattle Democratic Women have been holding informative sessions throughout our community to raise awareness of human trafficking in West Seattle. As a part of that effort, we have scheduled seven sessions where we will be holding up signs along major arterials in West Seattle letting people know where to call if they suspect human trafficking.

The sessions are each 2 hours long and there are six signs. We have some volunteers, but could use more people at each of these sessions. Ideally, we would have 12 volunteers for each session so that no one has to take a shift longer than 1 hour in length.

Please let Elizabeth Heath (purrfull@aol.com) know which of the following sessions and locations you want to volunteer for. Remember many hands make light loads.

•Tuesday, July 22, 4 to 6 pm, 35th Avenue SW, southbound south of Avalon Way SW.
•Saturday, August 2, 11 am to 1 pm, Harbor Avenue SW
•Thursday, August 7, 4 to 6 pm, Fauntleroy between 41st and 42.
•Tuesday, August 12, 4 to 6 pm, Delridge Way SW south of Genesee
•Saturday, August 16, 11 am to 1 pm, California Ave SW near Junction Rite-Aid.
•Tuesday, August 26, 4 to 6 pm, Harbor Avenue SW at Seacrest
•Tuesday, September 9, 4 to 6 pm, Admiral east of lookout.
Please contact Elizabeth as soon as possible for more details and to sign up. Invite your friends to join us for these fun events.

76. Anti oil tanker demo in Seattle 7/24
Thu Jul 24, 2014, 02:22 AM
Jul 2014

Remember the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska? Well, if a similar catastrophic oil disaster were to occur, it would devastate our communities and our livelihoods and cause irrespirable harm to Puget Sound.

Tomorrow, July 24th, we have a chance to say no more oil tanker traffic in Puget Sound.

When: Thursday, July 24 - tomorrow!
Time: 7pm to 9 pm, a public rally will be from 6:15-6:45 pm
Where: Federal Center South Galaxy Room, 4735 East Marginal Way South,Seattle
Note: A valid government-issued photo identification (for example, a driver's license) will be required for entrance to the building.

Will you join us on July 24th and ask the Army Corps to protect our community and waters by limiting the oil tanker traffic at the BP refinery in Cherry Point?

The Army Corps of Engineers recently released an Environmental Impact Statement that highlights the potential for additional oil tanker traffic coming and going to BP’s Cherry Point facility. Unfortunately, it doesn’t include an evaluation of key changes, like the new rail loop and key safety standards, or provide a cumulative review of vessels carrying oil and coal in the Salish Sea.

We need your help to stand up for our waters. A strong environmental review would limit BP from increasing oil tanker traffic in Puget Sound, decrease the chances of an oil spill in Puget Sound, analyze cumulative impacts from dangerous oil trains, and uphold the Magnuson Act.

Already, 200 folks attended a hearing on this issue in Bellingham, the vast majority of whom asked the Army Corps to hold BP accountable to their promises to not increase oil transport. Add your voice by joining us tomorrow!

Passed on July 2nd, 1964, the Civil Rights Act was a major accomplishment of the Civil Rights Movement and indeed for all Americans.

Voting and immigration rights are now under attack. Growing income inequality has led to increased hardship for an ever expanding number of people in our country.

We can commemorate and honor those who fought so hard to pass this act. We can also draw lessons from the sacrifices and struggle that occurred to pass this historic legislation and apply those lessons to our present day struggles.

81. Salish Sea celebration 9/7 in Seattle
Tue Sep 2, 2014, 05:05 AM
Sep 2014

There is no doubt that we are living in momentous times. As a species, it is clear that an awakening and collective choice must be made to redirect the course of our actions and beckon into being what can only be called the Great Healing of our Planet. It is time for humankind to grow up, and in that transformation, tap into our brilliant potential for wisdom, beauty, and for goodness. It is - ultimately - a beginning to a New Story; a story that 7 Generations from now will be sung and celebrated for the unimaginable feats we accomplished in face of the most seemingly insurmountable challenges.

This is our story.

As so many of us are lured in by the temptation of anger, bitterness, sadness and even despair, there is so much reason to have hope. At this very moment, unprecedented Alliances are forming between people from all walks of the planet, people who herald from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and stories. Our faces may look different, but our lungs breathe the same good air, our feet walk on the same rich land, and our hearts long for the same vision of treating all things in a Sacred Manner. We unite and work together now as One Human Family, to Protect and Restore the Sacredness of our dear Mother Earth.

And you are wholly invited.

In the Pacific Northwest, this type of unity is taking shape in many forms; one expression of this unity is in the Nawt-sa-maat Alliance. Nawt-sa-maat is a Coast Salish word, with one translation meaning: “One House. One Heart. One Prayer. United in Power to Protect the Sacred.” The Nawt-sa-maat Alliance is a multi-national, cross-cultural and intergenerational coalition of Indigenous tribal governments, a diverse array of organizations, and impassioned individuals from B.C. and Washington State who stand in solidarity with one another. The Alliance is calling for “Unprecedented, Unified Action” to Protect the Sacredness of the Salish Sea, and to stop the proposed Kinder Morgan Expansion Pipeline project and other fossil fuel threats that jeopardize the well-being of our land and waters.

On Sunday, September 7th, a historic Gathering is happening at Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center in Seattle. This Gathering will be the blessing and launch of the Nawt-sa-maat Alliance, and all members of the human family are warmly invited. Join us in Ceremony, a Salmon Bake, and have the opportunity to connect and network as we prepare for the 4 Days of Action from September 19th to September 22nd, culminating in the Signing of the International Treaty to Protect the Sacredness of the Salish Sea at Tsleil-Waututh Nation in Vancouver, B.C. The September 7th Gathering will be an opportunity to learn about the purpose, guiding principles, and members of the Alliance, and decide for yourself if you or your organization want to take part.

· You and others can RSVP here at Brown Paper Tickets. (We are asking for $20 to cover the event. However, no one will be turned away, and people can pay what they can afford, or choose to provide scholarships for those who cannot pay): http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/832983

· Here is a link to the official Gathering @ Daybreak Star Invitation with more detailed information about the event: http://bit.ly/1tXCHnZ

· Here is the 4 Days of Action Overview with information on the International Treaty Signing at Tsleil-Waututh Nation and other important details and events: http://bit.ly/1qgys9C

The extraction and disrespect of our Mother Earth ends now. Our goodness is our strength as we stand in unity. Together, as One Human Family, we will Protect and Restore the Sacred.

Thank you.

With Warm Love and Greetings,

Sundance Chief Rueben George
Hereditary Chief Phil Lane Jr.

84. "Disruptiion" climate film to be shown in several venues in September
Fri Sep 5, 2014, 04:18 AM

=Global leaders are meeting at the U.N. to talk about bold climate initiatives -- and tens of thousands of people from across the country will meet them in New York for the People's Climate March on September 21st, to make sure that talk leads to action.

Adding to this momentum, this weekend will bring the world premiere of Disruption -- a brand new movie about the science, politics, and movement around climate change. There's at least one screening near you:

Disruption takes you on a fast-paced journey through the tangled world of climate change: the science, the politics, the solutions, and the stories that define this crisis at this pivotal point in human history.

We'll be watching together in living rooms, church basements, and community centers. The movie is less than an hour long, so afterwards we'll also have time to discuss what we can do together on this crucial issue.

This is a movie by and for the movement. We're hoping it will galvanize a new wave of climate action and leadership this fall -- starting with the People’s Climate March in New York City on September 21st.

Haven't seen the trailer yet? You can watch it here.

Can't wait to watch (and march) with you,

85. The Psychology of Climate Change Threat--free 9/11 in Seattle
Sat Sep 6, 2014, 03:32 AM
Sep 2014

As hundreds of thousands of people plan to gather in New York for the largest march ever held on climate change, and the EPA begins to finalize historic carbon rules, George Marshall explains why our efforts to educate others is critical.

In the book "Don't Even Think About it: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Ignore Climate Change" author George Marshall explores the research that demonstrates how even when we accept that climate change is a dire problem, the human brain, with its built-in fight-or-flight cerebral hardware, is wired to ignore it.

George argues that once we understand what excites, threatens, and motivates us, we can rethink and reimagine climate change, for it is not an impossible problem. At the Sierra Club we agree 100%.

Come out for an exciting lecture with George Marshall in Seattle and together we can help solve one of the world's most series problems in climate change.

Event details:

Who: Author George Marshall, YOU, your friends, and other climate activists
What: Author lecture, entrance fee is $5
When: Thursday, September 11th 7:30—8:30 pm
Where: Downstairs at Town Hall 1119 8th Ave Seattle, WA 98101 (map)

George Marshall is the founder of the Climate Outreach and Information Network, based in Oxford, England, and over the past twenty-five years has worked at all levels of the environmental movement, including in senior positions for Greenpeace USA and the Rainforest Foundation.

He is one of the leading European experts in climate change communications, is a lead advisor to the Welsh Government, and counts major environmental organizations, politicians, faith groups, businesses, and trade unions among his clients.

ttle Association for Women in Science’s September Event
Pediatric Immune Response and Improving Vaccines

EVENT DETAILS
September 17, 2014 • 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Over 7 million infants die each year due to infections, many of which are vaccine-preventable. The causes
of reduced immunity in infants are ill defined. The immunosuppressive in utero environment needed for
maternal-fetal tolerance may influence subsequent immune responses in newborns. We have identified
myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) as a plausible mechanism for reduced immunity in infants.
MDSC frequencies are elevated in cord blood, decline in infants with age and are potent inhibitors of
T cell proliferation. Understanding the role MDSC play in infant immunity could improve vaccine responsiveness
in newborns and reduce mortality due to early-life infections.

94. Kennedy assassination witness to visit Seattle 10/6and 10/7
Sun Sep 28, 2014, 05:35 AM
Sep 2014

… the previously unidentified dark-haired young woman who was cited by multiple witnesses as being seen with assassination figures Lee Harvey Oswald, Clay Shaw, David Ferrie, Jack Ruby and others during New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison’s famed grand jury investigation of the assassination that began in 1966.

Her name is Judyth Vary Baker; she soon became Lee Harvey Oswald’s secret lover. An innovative biological research prodigy, she was recruited to work with Oswald, Dr. Mary Sherman and David Ferrie on a top-secret project to develop deadly bioweaponized cancer vaccines for the US government/military allegedly to assassinate Fidel Castro.

Then she and Lee, through their colleague -- the brilliant but tormented David Ferrie -- saw that many other deaths, and another assassination besides Castro’s were being planned. They both saw that they had destiny-changing choices to make – affecting, not only their own lives, but that of all Americans to this day.

Judyth Vary Baker is coming to Seattle to speak during two public appearances about her latest book on these tragic and as-yet unresolved events of our history: David Ferrie: Key to the Kennedy Assassination

96. Seattle Association for Women in Scienc meets 10/15 in Seattle

Oct 2014

Seattle Association for Women in Science’s October Program
“Global Empowerment of Women through STEM”

PROGRAM DETAILS
October 15, 2014 • 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Seattle AWIS members often discuss how we can support each other and continue our own professional
development as women in science. We strongly believe that access to this advocacy and support is a real
benefit to us as women in often male-dominated fields. The same -- and often much stronger-- challenges
face many women the world over. Especially in the developing world, women continue to face discrimination
in access to education, work, economic assets, and participation in decision making and government.
Access to healthcare is also limited: the maternal mortality ratio in developing nations is still fourteen times
higher than in western or developed regions

However, there are many organizations, often based in our local Seattle community, that are working toward
universal access to basic education, training women in health services, and supporting gender equality for

education and sustainable food and water programs; and

Lillian Baer, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Grandmother Project , which focuses on educating and
empowering female elders.

Our panelists will discuss their specific programs, the difference that STEM-related education, health, and
environmental sustainability programs have made in these developing communities, where they see their
organizations going in the future, and how YOU can contribute to these efforts from right here in Seattle.

99. Climate Leadership Summit, Seattle November 14-15
Thu Oct 30, 2014, 04:42 AM
Oct 2014

Today, there is unprecedented momentum in the effort to stop fossil fuels and win climate justice.

However, with most of our attention focused on fighting short-term battles, we often forget to ask the question:What would the world look like if we won?

Change the Course, a new program from Rainforest Action Network, is an invitation to dig deep and think hard about what it would actually take to stabilize the climate and create a just transition to a post-carbon future.

We are launching a series of climate-focused workshops and visioning sessions — in cities across the country as well as through a new online platform. Through this program, we will crowd-source a detailed vision of what a sustainable and just future would look like — and develop the strategies and tactics that will get us there.

Our opponents in the fossil fuel industry have their own vision for the future, one defined by rising oceans and ever-increasing carbon emissions — a future where extreme energy practices fly in the face of science and common-sense, and where the worst impacts of climate change are shouldered by the communities least able to bear them.

It’s not too late to define the future we want to live in.

Together, let’s change the course.

Please join us at the upcoming Climate Leadership Summit to kick this project off. This 2 day event will bring communities together from across the region for an innovative visioning, strategic development and skills summit. We will strengthen and grow local groups and prepare our movement to take action together, with our end goals in mind.

This summit will take place on Friday evening, November 14th from 5-9:30 and Saturday, November 15th from 12-6pm. RSVP now!

102. Staged reading of "My Name is Rachel Corrie" : Tacoma 11/06
Tue Nov 4, 2014, 07:37 AM
Nov 2014
http://www.thepierceprogressive.org/actionalertreadingrachelcorrie

What: Staged reading of the play My Name is Rachel Corrie
When: Thursday evening, November 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: The Tacoma Little Theater, 210 North I Street, Tacoma 98403

The play will be followed by a discussion and Q&A; Rachel's parents - Craig & Cindy Corrie - will be there to answer questions as well.

From personal experience, I can tell you that a staged reading is often as powerful as a fully-staged production. And also from personal experience: this is an incredible play.

If you are not familiar with who Rachel Corrie was, see http://rachelcorriefoundation.org/rachel

A bit about the play. Written by Alan Rickman and Katharine Viner from Rachel's diaries and emails, My Name is Rachel Corrie was first staged in April 2005 at the Royal Court Theatre, London. The play went on to win the Theatregoers' Choice Awards for Best Director and Best New Play, as well as Best Solo Performance for actress Megan Dodds. Then it went to the West End's Playhouse Theater, then to New York, and now it's been all over the US (from Seattle to Dallas to Lacrosse), many European countries (Iceland too!), Peru, Greece, Australia, and even Israel (in Arabic, in Haifa).

This production features Lauren Nance as Rachel, and Niclas R. Olson is directing.

I hope to see you Thursday evening. The show begins at 7:30. Tacoma Little Theater is located at 210 North I Street, Tacoma 98403. 253-272-2281.

109. Support a Progressive Sick Leave Ordinance: Tacoma 11/18
Sun Nov 16, 2014, 11:58 PM
Nov 2014

Posted: 14 Nov 2014 07:04 PM PST

What: Support a Progressive Paid Sick Leave Ordinance at Citizens' Forum.
When: Tuesday, November 18 at 5:30 p.m.
Where: Tacoma City Council Chambers, 747 Market Street, Tacoma.

It is reported that Mayor Strickland will introduce in the near future an ordinance for sick leave that is supported by the Chamber of Commerce and the Washington Retail Association. This proposal only includes 3 days of sick leave per year - far below what virtually all sick leave laws across the country provide. In addition, the proposed ordinance deliberately does not apply to workers who have union contracts: like all the hospital workers and grocery store workers in Tacoma. Finally, it offers weaker protections to tipped workers, which will adversely affect restaurant workers.

112. Support Electronic Frontier Foundation suit against NSA in Seattle 12/8
Thu Dec 4, 2014, 07:29 AM
Dec 2014

On December 8th, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Seattle will hear oral argument in Smith v. Obama, a case challenging the government's bulk collection of the telephone records of millions of innocent Americans. Anna Smith, an Idaho neonatal nurse and Verizon customer, argued that the program violated her First and Fourth Amendment rights by collecting a wealth of detail about her associations. With the case now on appeal, EFF and the ACLU have joined Mrs. Smith's legal defense.

We invite you to join us as we reject the government's spurious claims. By filling the courtroom, we hope to send a message to the government and the media that EFF members are on alert.

"Anna Smith proves that a single citizen has the power to stand up for her rights and challenge the government when it tramples them," said EFF Legal Director Cindy Cohn on our decision to join the case. "EFF is proud to lend our expertise in pursuing her appeal, which could very well be one of the cases that makes it to the Supreme Court."

WHAT:
Oral Argument in Smith v. Obama

118. WA Bikes work party in Seattle 12/18
Thu Dec 18, 2014, 08:57 AM
Dec 2014

You're invited to join us for this month's Volunteer Work Party: tomorrow, Thursday, December 18, from 1-4pm, in our office located at 314 First Avenue South. (We hope you'll pardon the very short notice -- it's proved difficult to schedule around the holidays.) We hope you can join us to connect with fellow bicycling advocates and provide an invaluable help to our mission to support a bicycle-friendly state. We'll be preparing a couple of mailings, catching up -- and, of course, helping ourselves to an assortment of snacks.

If this is your first time coming to one of our work parties, and/or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the number or email below. Also, please RSVP so I know how much food to get -- and let me know if you have any special food requests or dietary restrictions.

Thanks for everything you do!
