...but I have to ask: considering broadcast radio (except for classic rock, sports, and Rush) seems to be following print publications on a not-so-slow fade compared to net-based media, are there really any potential leads for a local station willing to take a leap of faith on what, even at best, is a niche market compared to the "big three" listed above? I was semi-hopeful of such an event in the months immediately following AM1090's format change, but, the longer this goes on without any interest from station owners, the less likely I think it will be. Personally, I'm concentrating my attention on helping Progressive Voices (available from TuneIn on computers and smartphones) be a viable alternative nationwide, as it features practically all the hosts we used to get on 1090.

3. Actually, Goldman made that very point

He recommending internet streaming and podcasting. If we could get that going, it may very well be that AM frequencies will eventually become unwanted junk (sort of like FM in 1960), and an AM station could be added cheaply. The major advantage to that would be the random dial flipping effect--I never knew about him or any of the other progressive talkers (I thought of Hartmann mainly as an author) until I heard them on AM 1090. It is only now that I know who they are that I can actively look for podcasts.

Progressive Radio Northwest (PRNW) invites you to join independent journalist Mark Taylor-Canfield (http://facebook.com/mtaylorcanfield) on Wednesday, March 26, at 7:00 PM at Impact Hub/Seattle, 220 Second Ave South, for the next in its series of free community forums.

Taylor-Canfield, whose news articles and editorials have been published at Huffington Post, Daily Kos, Truth-out.org, and other major news sources, is a regular contributor to national progressive radio shows headlined by Thom Hartmann, Mike Papantonio/Ring of Fire Radio, Sam Seder/Majority Report, Norman Goldman, Jeff Santos/Revolution Radio Network, Nicole Sandler/Radio or Not and others.

Joining him for a lively panel discussion on how social networking is being used to access, produce and promote progressive media are:
· Jacob Dean, host and creator of the Portland-based Filter Free Radio (http://filterfreeradio.com/) and former producer for The Thom Hartmann Program; and
· Seattle based Space Dog Radio (http://spacedogradio.com/), “a fully independent radio station that provides entertaining sounds about a wide spectrum of topics while taking the art of radio to a new level.”

While progressive cities are losing their progressive radio stations, the digital universe is alive with a rich spectrum of progressive talkers -- from familiar national voices to lesser known but equally impassioned radio talents.

PRNW is working to bringing strong-signal radio back to the greater Seattle area. In the meantime, the extreme right isn’t going away. Join us to explore the power of social networking in building progressive networks and promoting online progressive media. Get your progressive tweet on!

May 2014

We’re happy to report that Progressive Radio Northwest (PRNW) recently incorporated as a nonprofit organization and elected our first Board of Directors – important milestones in our mission to:

· bring strong-signal progressive talk radio back to the Pacific Northwest, and
· promote progressive programming on the free public airwaves and digital technologies.

We can't do it without you.

Those of you who have signed up on our website, attended Party On with Norman Goldman or one of our free community forums, "liked" us on Facebook, contributed much needed startup donations or just sent random thoughts and comments our way are all an important part of our progressive radio community. You send a strong message to potential advertisers and investors that the greater Seattle area can support progressive talk programming … BIG time!

We'll be making an announcement soon about some exciting plans for the summer and beyond. As they say, stay tuned ...

In the meantime, check out the video from our March 26 Forum on Progressive Media in the Social Media Age:

Moderated by PRNW Vice President Phil Harrison, the panel featured independent journalist Mark Taylor Canfield (https://www.facebook.com/mtaylorcanfield), online radio host Space Dog of the Seattle-Portland based Space Dog Radio (http://spacedogradio.com/) and Jacob Dean of Portland-based Filter Free Radio (http://filterfreeradio.com/).

7. 2014 progressive radio tour
Sat May 24, 2014, 03:10 AM
May 2014

The Progressive Radio Northwest (PRNW) team will be using the summer months to build awareness and support of our efforts to bring progressive talk back to the Pacific Northwest … and we need your help!

Host a Stop on the “Summer of Progressive Radio Listening Tour”

· This can be an event at an accessible local venue or in your home. It can be a Potluck, Bar-B-Q or simple meetup. We will need a spot with internet access … read on to learn why!

We want to carry the call for progressive radio throughout the Greater Puget Sound. Our plan is to have a series of localized town halls for you to share your ideas on how the next progressive station can be structured and other progressive issues of note.

· We’ll provide a moderator and outreach materials; we’re asking that our hosts make the event arrangements and help spread the word in your communities.

· We also plan to tape the sessions for broadcast when we launch our website radio station, which will serve as a model for the future terrestrial format. You and your friends could be on the radio!

For the Pilot Phase, we hope to work with hosts who think they can attract 20 or more guests. And yes, we will also be using the event to raise funds for our First Ever Nitty Gritty Just the Basics No Glam Grassroots Fundraising Campaign. Startup costs may not be very alluring .... but they don't go away.

KPTK-AM boasted a loyal listenership from throughout the greater Puget Sound. We rely on your continued enthusiasm as we build the case to show potential investors and advertisers that the area can support another strong signal progressive talk station … big time.

With appreciation,

The PRNW Team
