Public schools were scheduled to remain open Wednesday, including Kent, Tacoma, Lake Washington, Everett and Seattle. On Tuesday Seattle Mayor Ed Murray urged schools to give excused absences to students to allow them to attend the parade.

"It is my hope that the school district will excuse absences for students who want to join their family during the #Celebreate48 events," Mayor Murray tweeted.
