1. Forum on Expanding Social Security in Seattle 2/23
Mon Dec 29, 2014, 10:01 PM
Dec 2014

Nancy Altman will be one of the featured speakers in a forum on Monday, February 23, in Seattle entitled "Social Security - Why It's Not Broke and How We Can Expand It". Joining Ms. Altman on the program will be Seattle City Council member, Kshama Sawant, and Washington State Labor Council President, Jeff Johnson.

Social Security Works! Why Social Security Isn’t Going Broke and How Expanding It Will Help Us All, is the recently released book by Ms. Altman and her co-author, Eric Kingson. Ms. Altman has a thirty-five year background in the areas of Social Security and private pensions. She is co-director of Social Security Works and co-chair of the Strengthen Social Security coalition and campaign. She previously authored The Battle for Social Security: From FDR’s Vision to Bush’s Gamble (John Wiley & Sons, 2005).

The Seattle forum is part of a campaign to expand the growing chorus of voices in Congress and elsewhere calling for the expansion of our Social Security system. We know that Social Security is not “going broke” and also does not add a penny to the national debt. We are fighting against the three-decade-long, billionaire-funded campaign to make us believe that Social Security is destined to collapse.

With the decline in defined benefit pensions and the total inadequacy of 401(ks), there is a looming retirement crisis that will affect more than two- thirds of today’s workers. Social Security is a powerful program that can help stop the collapse of the middle class, lessen the pressure squeezing families from all directions, and help end the upward redistribution of wealth that has resulted in perilous levels of inequality.

All Americans deserve to have dignified retirement years as well as an umbrella to protect them and their families in the event of disability or premature death. At stake are our values and the kind of country we want for ourselves and for those that follow. From the Silent Generation to Baby Boomers, from Generation X to Millennials and Generation Z, all of us have a stake in understanding the real story about Social Security.

Ms. Altman is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Pension Rights Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of beneficiary rights. She is also on the Board of Directors of the National Academy of Social Insurance, a membership organization of over 800 of the nation’s leading experts on social insurance.

From 1983 to 1989, Ms. Altman was on the faculty of Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and taught courses on private pensions and Social Security at the Harvard Law School. In 1982, she was Alan Greenspan’s assistant in his position as chairman of the bipartisan commission that developed the 1983 Social Security amendments.

Please plan to attend this exciting, movement-building forum on Monday, Feb. 23, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Joe Crump Hall, UFCW 21, 5030 First Avenue S., Seattle.

CAGJ Climate Justice Book Discussion and Potluck
Location: Central Co-op Rochdale Room, 19th and Madison.

In 2014 CAGJ committed to prioritizing taking action on climate justice. To inspire and inform this work in 2015, we are starting the year with a discussion of Naomi Klein’s new book, This Changes Everything: The Climate Vs. Capitalism. The book discussion – open to all CAGJ members and supporters - is part of the lead-up to our annual strategic retreat. Through the book discussion we hope to address questions about the role of climate justice in the contemporary political “moment,” the role of CAGJ in contributing to the climate justice movement, and potential for future work together. It will be a casual, CAGJ-style potluck! Feel free to bring friends! If you are unable to complete the book, no problem, please come having read the Introduction and Chapters 3 and 4. For those who do not have the book, a PDF of two chapters can be provided; email us for more info

11. SHELL BAKKEN OIL RAIL TERMINAL PROJECT 1/28 & 1/29 in Mt Vernon
Sun Jan 25, 2015, 01:15 AM

SHELL BAKKEN OIL RAIL TERMINAL PROJECT

SHELL AND APPELLANT HEARING, WED., JAN. 28, 2015
SHELL PUBLIC HEARING, THURS., JAN. 29, 2015

SHELL AND APPELLANT HEARING
Appeal Hearing Concerning Skagit County’s Mitigated Determination of Non-Significance
(The public is invited to observe and will give no testimony.)
Wed., Jan. 28, 9 a.m.
County Commissioners Hearing Room
1800 Continental Place, Mount Vernon

Shell Oil and Appellant legal representatives will testify before Wick Dufford, Skagit County Hearing Examiner.

Skagit County favored Shell Oil’s proposed Bakken oil rail terminal by determining the terminal's impact upon the Padilla Bay Estuarine shoreline as a Mitigated Determination of Non-Significance (MDNS)—meaning that impacts are reduced by changes/conditions to a nonsignificant level.
Appellant members RE Sources for Sustainable Communities, Friends of the San Juans, ForestEthics, the Washington Environmental Council, Friends of the Earth and Evergreen Islands filed an appeal, challenging Skagit County’s issuance of the MDNS. A factor is that a portion of the proposed Bakken oil rail terminal would be located within shoreline jurisdiction associated with Padilla Bay. See Appealing Crude-by-Rail Decision in Skagit County.

SHELL PUBLIC HEARING
(Testimony from the public is sought.)
Thurs., Jan. 29 (Please see times below.)
County Commissioners Hearing Room
1800 Continental Place, Mount Vernon (map)

The hearing process will consist of five parts: 1) Skagit County Planning & Development gives its case. 2) Shell Oil gives its case. 3) The public gives testimony—and may direct questions to the hearing examiner for his consideration. 4) The Hearing Examiner asks questions of Skagit County and Shell oil. 5) Shell Oil and Skagit County give rebuttals.

The hearing process begins at 9 a.m.
Although public testimony begins at 11 a.m., you are advised to arrive no later than 10 a.m. to sign up for oral testimony. First come, first served.
Hand in written comments at the public hearing or send them beforehand to Skagit County Planning & Development, arriving in-house no later than 4:30 p.m., Tues. Jan. 27.
No emails accepted. The online comment form and snail mail address are found at How to Comment on Permit Applications and Appeals. Scroll down. The permit number is PL13-0468. The title is Shoreline Substantial Development Permit/Variance.

What comments/testimony may you make to Wick Dufford, the Hearing Examiner? Tell/write him that you want an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Not enough information has been provided to determine the full impact of Shell’s proposed Bakken oil rail terminal. An EIS determines that a proposal is likely to have significant adverse environmental impacts. An EIS provides an impartial discussion of significant environmental impacts, reasonable alternatives and mitigation measures that would avoid or minimize adverse impacts. On Jan. 16, 2015, Wick Dufford, Skagit County Hearing Examiner, determined that impact considerations are not limited to any particular limited geographic area. See County Hearing Examiner to Take Comments on Shell Rail Project. Skagit County last determined an EIS in 1999. !!

12. Seattle solidarity event 1/29; support Lummi opposition to coal and oil terminals
Sun Jan 25, 2015, 02:18 AM
Jan 2015

With the rallying cry of “Warrior Up!” the Lummi Nation embarked on a 5,000 mile journey last summer to oppose the proposed shipment of an unprecedented volume of coal and oil from the American heartland to the Pacific Coast.

Please join us for a special evening celebrating the beauty and power of that amazing journey through art, pictures and words. Hear from Lummi leaders on the recent demand that the federal government deny a permit for the Cherry Point coal export terminal, which would violate treaty rights.

When: Thursday, January 29th 6:00—8:00 pm
Where: Impact Hub Seattle, 220 2nd Avenue South, Seattle
Who: Special guest speakers:
Jay Julius, Lummi Indian Business Council
Dow Constantine, King County Executive
Jewell James, Head Carver, Lummi House of Tears Carvers

What: Premiere of the Totem Pole Journey video by Fred Lane; photo story of the journey by photographer James Leder; showcase of the 14x21 foot mural that was painted at stops along the journey; speakers from the Lummi Nation.

Plus a unique silent auction with Native American artworks dedicated to the theme “Visions of Xwe’chi’eXen” (Cherry Point). Please bring your checkbook!

The proposed Cherry Point coal terminal would be built on a 3,500-year-old Lummi village site known as Xwe’chi’eXen. Coal exports break the social compact between the government of the United States and its people to secure the general welfare of its residents. It also threatens a long-established way of life, and a rich and varied ecological, social and cultural landscape. It would dishonor thousands of years of tribal history. The struggle to stop coal export through this area is not only a matter of environmental justice, but of social justice and civil rights.

Please join us for this event and show your support for the protection of our sacred places in Washington.
Please join us for this event and show your support for the protection of our sacred places in Washington.

If you haven’t taken action yet, please write your Senators and your Member of Congress today and ask them to support the protection of the Lummi Nation’s treaty rights. http://org2.salsalabs.com/o/5168/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=19076

13. Bacbone Campaign and hip hop get together in Feb (Seattle & Tacoma) for Move to Amend
Tue Jan 27, 2015, 04:33 AM
Jan 2015

WHAT THE (BLEEP) HAPPENED TO HIP HOP!?

Move to Amend is partnering with Hip Hop Congress, an international grassroots organization working to evolve hip hop culture by inspiring social action and creativity within the movement. We invite you to join Move to Amend and Hip Hop Congress at our upcoming event called What the (Bleep) Happened to Hip Hop?! (Hint, the short answer is the corporate commodification of a liberatory art form is what happened to Hip Hop)

What the (Bleep) Happened to Hip Hop is an educational campaign to address the corporatization of culture and how corporate power has co-opted our music, dance, and other arts. This is a unique opportunity for Move To Amend supporters to learn from-- and build relationships with-- young people, people of color, and culture workers. Groupings that do not often attend standard Move To Amend presentations. Please take advantage of this opportunity to connect and to grow!
Tacoma What the (Bleep) Happened to Hip Hop Forum and People's Movement Assembly:

Seattle, WA 98122Sunday, February 15th, 1PM-6PM
Cortona Cafe
2425 E Union St
Seattle, WA 98122

The events in Tacoma will be separate from those in Seattle. The Tacoma event will be a truncated version of the full event that will happen in Seattle. Although this event is a process, and each section builds off of the last, we understand that these are long days. We invite you to participate in any way you can, for as much time as you can.

On Saturday, we will host educational panels and participatory conversations about culture and corporate rule. On Sunday, we will hold a People’s Movement Assembly where we will engage in action-oriented conversations about our current situation and how to get to the world we want and deserve.

Move to Amend supporter Ruthi McDonald said, "I went into this under the impression that Hip Hop was loud, angry music about ho's, drugs, and violence. I have since been schooled that I was completely and utterly mistaken. That's what they want us to think; "us" being white, middle-aged Americans. I even said in the opening introductions that as a schoolteacher, I only really knew it as something to be "tolerated." There is a strand that fits the above description on corporate radio, but that is only a small branch of the tree. Like yoga and it's many limbs, hip hop is very diverse. I met a group of beautiful human beings who care about their environment, their community, and their art."

22. Camp Wellstone returns to Seattle April 10-12
Fri Feb 6, 2015, 03:36 AM
Feb 2015

At the last one I attended, one of the organizers said that Seattle was different from their other venues in two ways.

1. People who sign up always show up, so they never overbook.
2. During personal introductions, it's very common to identify yourself by stating which state legislative district you are from

http://www.wellstone.org/events/camp-wellstone-seattle-wa-0

Camp Wellstone is open to anyone interested in gaining practical skills in progressive political action. During Camp Wellstone, we provide focus areas based on your role in progressive organizing, each with a distinctive curriculum taught by some of the nation's leading experts in grassroots politics and organizing.

Camp Wellstone always takes place over the weekend. The schedule is: 3pm - 9pm Friday, April 10th. 9am - 6:30pm Saturday, April 11th. 9am - 3:30pm Sunday, April 12th.
Registration is now open!

You register by choosing one of three tracks below, that you will stay with throughout the weekend (click the green track names to register!)

Grassroots Organizer Track: How to win on grassroots organizing issues
Working on a Campaign Track: How to win progressive campaigns as a campaign worker or volunteer
Being a Candidate Track: How to run and win a progressive campaign, for those running for office or considering running in the future

Not sure which track you want to attend? Learn more about them here.
Registration Fees

The cost to attend is your choice of registration fee of either $150 or $300. We believe in training everyone, regardless of income – so while the true cost of Camp Wellstone is actually greater than $300, we strive to keep our trainings affordable for progressive leaders at all income levels – and we look to you to decide what’s fair, based on your personal circumstances. If you cannot pay either of these fees, please contact Mysti, to discuss scholarship options. No matter the level you choose, the benefits are the same (training, customized materials, one of our books, and 3 meals during the weekend).
Training Location and Details

The exact location for the camp has not yet been confirmed. Once it has this page will be updated. Participants are responsible for their own travel and lodging accommodations.

More details about camp will be sent in the confirmation email - which is sent to all registered participants 10-12 days before camp.

Feb 2015
https://ppvotesnw.fastercampaigns.com/wendyseattle

Today we are faced with the most threatening Congressional majority women’s rights activists have seen in decades. The very first week of this Congress, this majority wasted no time trying to further limit a women’s right to choose. We need your help to fight back.

Wendy Davis is a national champion for women’s health. She floored the country when she filibustered on the floor of the Texas Senate to block an archaic attempt to eliminate women’s access to healthcare in Texas, and later was the Democratic nominee for Governor in 2014. Join us in hearing a courageous fighter for women's health, rights, and justice!

24. Anti-TPP events statewide 2/17
Fri Feb 6, 2015, 04:25 AM
Feb 2015

CALL TO ACTION FEBRUARY 17!

TPP –The death of good paying jobs and healthy environment.

The Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a multi-national trade agreement being negotiated behind closed doors by the very corporations who interests stand to benefit the most from Its passage. Even Congress does not know what is being wheeled and dealed, let alone the American people. If allowed to pass the TPP would:

Allow corporations to outsource more jobs overseas, making America’s race-to-the-bottom even worse because US workers would have to compete for jobs with desperate Asian Pacific workers who are paid just pennies per hour.

Create a special dispute resolution process that would allow corporations to challenge any domestic laws that would hurt their expected profits, which means…

The American peoples’ ability to protect the environment from corporate mis-doings would be nullified.

…and much more.

By connecting with these groups, we can better engage our local communities in supporting the goal of a stable climate.

Fri Feb 13, 2015, 04:55 AM
Feb 2015

Speak Up for Affordable Housing in Shoreline

It should be possible for working people to afford housing and still have enough money for

the basics like groceries and gas and child care. Unfortunately, rents and home prices in

Shoreline are out of reach for many families and individuals earning low and modest incomes.

Inclusionary housing policies, such as incentive zoning (IZ), offer Shoreline an opportunity

to meet the needs of its residents and workforce efficiently in partnership with developers.

This is particularly important as Shoreline grows and welcomes Light Rail.

The Shoreline City Council is currently working on incentive zoning policies. If you live or

work in Shoreline, now is the time speak up and we have not one, but two great ways for you

to accomplish this!

1. Testify at an upcoming City Council meeting

The Shoreline City Council is scheduled to adopt its incentive zoning program on Monday,

February 23rd (7pm, Shoreline City Hall). We know public speaking can cause anxiety for many

of us, but don't worry, we're here to help you every step of the way. It is just that

important for city council members to hear what you have to say! If you are interested in

testifying, please contact Kayla Schott-Bresler for more details.kayla@housingconsortium.org

2. Email the Shoreline City Council
http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/50287/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=15298

Running short on time? We've made it simple for you! Please send an email, crafted by HDC,

urging the City to pass strong affordable housing policies and ensure people of all incomes

can thrive in Shoreline. Remember, personal messages are the most effective, so if you have

a few extra moments please tailor your e-mail: it makes all the difference!

Make Your Voice Heard in Bellevue!

Care about affordable housing in Bellevue? Then make your voice heard and tell the City you

support strong affordable housing policies in the Comprehensive Plan! Tomorrow, February

13th, Bellevue will begin an online open house to share a copy of its Comprehensive Plan and

collect feedback - if you live or work in Bellevue, be sure to take a look and participate!

If in-person meetings are more your style, you may also choose to attend one of two upcoming

Open Houses listed below:

Open House
February 25, 5 - 7pm
Bellevue City Hall
450 110th Ave NE

Open House
February 26, 5 - 7pm
Interlake High School
16245 NE 24th St, Bellevue, WA 98008

Planning Commission Public Hearing
March 4, 6:30pm
Bellevue City Hall
450 110th Ave NE

Remember, you don't have to be an expert to communicate your vision of an affordable

community; simply standing up and saying you support affordable housing has a huge impact.

30. Support $15/hour activists in SeaTac 2/19
Thu Feb 19, 2015, 05:02 AM
Feb 2015

On December 3rd, Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant and three minimum-wage activists were charged with disorderly conduct in the wake of their November 19th arrest for protesting Alaska Airlines' efforts to avoid paying its Seattle-Tacoma International Airport workers a $15/hour minimum wage.

Councilmember Sawant remarked, "Alaska Airlines should be on trial, not the workers who are fighting for their basic rights and for their families! Alaska Airlines is blocking a democratic decision by SeaTac voters, blatantly violating the law, and paying its workers a poverty wage while hoarding massive profits."

Please join us for the arraignment hearing tomorrow:

This Thursday February 19 at 1pm

SeaTac City Hall (parking lot), 4800 South 188th Street #100

SeaTac, WA 98188

We'll rally outside the courthouse and hear from the "SeaTac 3" - Councilmember Kshama Sawant, Socrates Bravo, and Rev. John Helmiere. Bring friends and family, and show your support by wearing your red 15 Now t-shirt at the hearing.

31. Rally: No oil trains! ~ Not Under Our City; Seattle 2/24
Sat Feb 21, 2015, 09:43 PM
Feb 2015

This past week, a string of oil train derailments, explosions, and spills across North America dumped pollutants into waterways and neighborhoods; made a mockery of newer and 'safer" tank car models; and underlined the utter madness of transporting Bakken crude and tar sands oil by rail. In response to these latest disasters, 350 Seattle is organizing a rally on Tuesday, near King Street Station.

The rally will take place at 5:30 PM outside the southern entrance to a hundred year-old rail tunnel that extends one mile beneath downtown Seattle. Oil trains currently roll through this tunnel on a daily basis.

We are at ground zero. The developers of the Alberta tar sands, the Bakken oil fields and the Powder River Basin are focused on the Northwest as the cheapest route to reach markets for their crude oil and coal. In the last few years, industry has proposed two large oil pipelines, five new natural gas pipelines, seven coal export terminals, and nearly a dozen oil-by-rail facilities in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. And now, the Port of Seattle has agreed to be home to Artic drilling machinery. If all is permitted, some communities in Washington would see up to 60 trains carrying crude oil and coal, and an unprecedented 4,000 tankers on waters.

We need to keep saying NO to this unhealthy insanity and YES to clean energy.

Please join us in expressing our profound opposition to oil trains in Seattle and a future that builds out projects that continue our use of global warming causing fuels like oil and coal.

Wear red, and bring your own home-made signs if you'd like; there will also be opportunities to hold oil train props and LED lit letters with the message: NO OIL TRAINS ~ NOT UNDER OUR CITY.

Rally: No oil trains! ~ Not Under Our City
Tuesday February 24th, 5:30 PM
4th Ave. and S. Jackson St, across from King Street Station, Seattle

We have trouble putting out today's fires–
let alone planning for tomorrow's.

Our open spaces are shrinking–
as fast as our attention spans.

We're hoping to leave a healthy place for our kids–
one they'll be able to afford.

No one said sustaining this region would be easy–
and it isn't.

But our love for this place makes anything possible–
it's time.

33. Forum on hate crimes against LGBT community in Seattle 3/3
Fri Feb 27, 2015, 07:39 PM
Feb 2015

There has been a surge in hate crimes against the LGBTQ community on Capitol Hill and in Seattle in general. Harassment and verbal and physical intimidation is on the rise, as well. We need to have a serious and genuine conversation about this problem, and we need to find solutions.

Our Capitol Hill community has long been a bastion of the LGBTQ struggle. Join me at a community forum on Tuesday, March 3rd at 7:00PM at the All Pilgrims Christian Church to help carry on that struggle. We’ll hear testimony from various LGBTQ activists, together with human service providers and social justice advocates.
Danni Askini, Executive Director of the Gender Justice League, will moderate an amazing list of speakers that includes:

Zach Pullin – Capitol Hill Community Council, Acting President
Lils Fujikawa – API Chaya, Queer Network Program Coordinator
Raven E. Heavy Runner – Northwest Two-Spirit Society, MSW, Acting Co-Chair
Christie Santos-Livengood – Entre Hermanos, former Women’s Program Manager
Shaun Knittel – Social Outreach Seattle, President & Founder; Seattle Gay News Associate Editor
Marta Idowu – Seattle Office for Civil Rights, Seattle LGBT Commission Liaison

I will be present to listen to the speakers and community, and to add LGBTQ-relevant perspectives on housing, human services, transit, and overall affordability and livability on Capitol Hill and in our city.

Let’s begin a conversation to find bold and lasting solutions to address this crisis. Join the struggle!

Sincerely,
Kshama

36. Attend Port of Seattle on Shell Oil and Arctic drilling 3/10 SeaTac
Fri Mar 6, 2015, 10:15 AM
Mar 2015

The Port of Seattle recently signed a lease with Shell Oil to allow the company to base its Arctic drilling operations in Seattle. There were no public hearings, no comment period, and seemingly, no consideration for the values of the Puget Sound residents.

Drilling for oil as the Arctic ice melts is like pouring gas on the fire of catastrophic climate change. A new study in Nature confirms that if we want to have any hope to avoid the most catastrophic impacts from global warming, we can’t allow oil drilling in the Arctic, or other forms of extreme fossil fuel development.

In other words, we can either let Shell drill in the Arctic, or we can leave our kids a planet fit for human civilization. We can’t do both.

It’s bad enough that Shell would knowingly undo our future this way. But using Seattle as the staging area for this madness? That’s adding insult to injury. Seattle and King County is justifiably proud of our leadership on climate and clean energy. We’re standing up to the coal and oil industry by rejecting their terminal proposals. We’re pioneering sustainable prosperity-the antidote to climate disruption. Our Port of Seattle has made significant investments in clean energy and climate, at times living up to its tagline as “The Green Gateway." It makes no sense to sacrifice the Port’s credibility only to help Shell unleash huge amounts of carbon that need to stay out of the atmosphere.

Please help us deliver this message to Shell and the Port of Seattle: Not here. Not us. No gosh darn way.

The Port Commissioners will meet this Tuesday to discuss this proposal and we plan to pack the house. Please join us, wear red and say NO WAY.
What: Port Commissioner hearing
When: Tues. March 10, 1 - 2:30 p.m.
Where:Sea-Tac Conference Center (Inside the airport, 17801 International Blvd, RM 6012M)
Wear: RED
We recommend taking the Light Rail or other public transit to the meeting, but if you need to drive, the Port of Seattle will validate your parking.

Please RSVP to me, and I will forward you talking points that may be helpful in composing public testimony. You are also very welcome to attend in solidarity.

Want to do more? Please send an email to the Seattle City Council at: council@seattle.gov asking them to “please urge the Port to rescind the lease between Shell and the Port.”

Spread the word on Facebook.

Hope to see you Tuesday!

We have trouble putting out today's fires–
let alone planning for tomorrow's.

Our open spaces are shrinking–
as fast as our attention spans.

We're hoping to leave a healthy place for our kids–
one they'll be able to afford.

No one said sustaining this region would be easy–
and it isn't.

But our love for this place makes anything possible–
it's time.

50. Protest Shell Oil Arctic drilling in Seattle 4/26
Mon Apr 20, 2015, 07:19 AM
Apr 2015
https://www.facebook.com/events/817444718343587/

Six volunteers just spent 123 hours on one of Shell’s drilling rigs to shine a light on the company’s plans to drill in the Arctic. That same Shell drilling rig arrived in Washington yesterday — and now all eyes are on the people of Seattle.

It’s time we draw the line — Seattle won’t stand for Arctic drilling!

When the Port of Seattle made the deal to host Shell's Arctic drilling rigs this January, they hoped it would go unnoticed. Instead, thousands of your emails, phone calls, and in-person testimonials have built pressure for the Port of Seattle to tear up Shell’s lease. We won't stop until Shell is out of Seattle: the future depends on us.

Together, we must show Shell and the Port of Seattle that we will not stand for Arctic drilling. Join us Sunday, April 26, for a peaceful demonstration in Seattle to say SHELL NO to Arctic drilling.

Here are the details:

What
Shell No! Seattle Draws the Line
Family-friendly rally

When
Sunday, April 26 at 2 PM

Where
Myrtle Edwards Park
3130 Alaskan Way
Seattle, Washington 9812

We'll gather together at Myrtle Edwards Park to hear from inspiring speakers including Sundance Chief Rueben George, Annie Leonard of Greenpeace USA, and a star lineup of local climate justice speakers including Jill Mangaliman of Got Green and Sarra Tekola of Divest UW.

We'll present our commissioners with letters, photographs, and small art projects — all representing what we could lose if Shell’s climate-breaking plans go forward. And we will ask Port Commissioners to join us there. But if they don't, they'll still have proof of the fierce love and desire for justice that fuels us.

Join us April 26th to send a message to our commissioners: Shell No! Arctic oil must stay in the ground.

Like coal exports and exploding oil trains, Arctic oil drilling is extremely dangerous — and completely unnecessary. Shell’s drilling plans will devastate both the environment and peoples of the Arctic and communities already suffering effects of climate change: extreme weather, droughts, and sea-level rise.

It’s up to us stand up to corporate bullies like Shell that tell us there's no better way to power our world.

See you on April 26th,

Mary Nicol
Seattle Organizer, Greenpeace USA

P.S. Just yesterday, one of Shell's Arctic drilling rigs arrived in Washington. Join us in a rally to say Shell NO to Arctic drilling this Sunday, April 26th.

56. Seattle City Council hearing 5/13 on Fair Trade in Music
Wed May 13, 2015, 03:46 AM
May 2015

Seattle-area musicians are organizing for fair treatment.

Fair Trade Music is an effort by musicians to establish fair standards for their work in music clubs. It’s a modest first step. Twenty area venues have signed a Fair Trade Music pledge, promising to provide written performance agreements with transparency and accountability, and to resolve disagreements that may arise.

But unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Musicians face obstacles that other workers never do. They may have to “pay to play” or play for “zero minus expenses” – in other words, they bring the audience into a club, but the club has no obligation to pay the musicians anything. Often working without a written agreement of any kind, musicians may reach the end of the evening and find that they’re being paid less than agreed upon – or nothing at all.

Fair Trade Music, backed by American Federation of Musicians Local 76-493, is working to change the culture in Seattle’s music scene – to make Seattle’s claim to be a “Music City” real. And they’re getting support from not only the music community, but the larger community, as well.

Seattle City Councilmembers, Mayor Murray and the Director of the City Office of Film + Music have joined musicians, unions and labor leaders and others in the music industry in signing statements of support for Fair Trade Music goals. And tomorrow, the City Council’s Finance and Culture Committee will hold a brief public hearing on a resolution, sponsored by Councilmembers Mike O’Brien and Nick Licata, to declare May 20 th “Fair Trade Music Day” in Seattle. There will be testimony from area musician-activists, as well as Washington State Labor Council President Jeff Johnson.

If you can, please join us:

59. Anti-Reichert anti-TPA demonstration in Seattle 5/28
Wed May 27, 2015, 05:37 PM
May 2015

Rep. Dave Reichart supports the TPP Fast Track legislation and the Trans Pacific Partnership free trade agreement. He is proposing a "compromise" that attaches partial funding of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Program (TAA), a program that is supposed to assist workers who lose their jobs because of trade agreements, to the Fast Track legislation. He hopes his "compromise" will help passage of Fast Track in the House. Rep Reichart's proposal takes $700 million dollars from the Medicare Trust Fund to help pay for TAA.

PSARA members have an opportunity to let Rep. Reichart know what we think. Rep. Reichart is speaking on Thursday, May 28 at the World Affairs Council at the Seattle World Trade Center, 2200 Alaskan Way, Seattle 98121, about why he supports the TPP, and Fast Track.

The Washington Fair Trade Coalition is joining with Medicare Advocates for a demonstration beginning at 11 a.m. and ending by noon on the sidewalk outside where Rep. Reichart is speaking. PSARA will indicate our opposition to the Fast Track legislation and express our outrage at the proposal to steal $$s from the Medicare Trust Fund in order to fund TAA and help get Fast Track through the House. Rep. Reichart needs to hear that we are outraged that he is proposing to use the Medicare Trust Fund as a piggy bank to push through Fast Track.

Please join us.

60. King County Metro Transit meetings in June
Fri Jun 5, 2015, 04:59 AM
Jun 2015

Help shape the Metro Transit system of our future

King County Metro and Sound Transit are teaming up for a series of joint open houses beginning June 16. The events will give King County residents a convenient one-stop opportunity to help shape two important planning efforts.

As Sound Transit shapes a ballot measure for Sound Transit 3, Metro is looking 25 years down the road to make sure the right mix of services and connections are in place to get people where they need to go. These open houses will be an opportunity to learn about and weigh in on both planning initiatives.

Metro wants to know what type of service you think would work best in your community based on projected population and job growth.

Your input will help transit planners understand what type of service you value in your community, and will help shape the proposed network of bus routes and facilities that Metro will present in the fall of 2015 for additional public input. The final plan will be shared for another round of public input in early 2016, then transmitted to the King County Council in mid-2016.

Learn more at www.kcmetrovision.org and share your opinion in the online survey.https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/kcmetrovision2

Fri Jul 24, 2015, 04:20 AM
Jul 2015

It's been a month since the Polar Destroyer left Seattle and after a period of rest and reflection a lot of people want to get together and talk about where to go with this campaign and these organizing structures.
On August 8th Rising Tide Seattle will be hosting a Shell No! Party for Climate Justice to take a look back at our crazy spring and celebrate our work.
Then on August 10th we'll be having a SNAC meeting to talk about how to move forward - both on challenging shell and on some people's desire for broader cross-movement organizing.

sHell No! Party for Climate Justice:
Join Rising Tide Seattle and our allies as we look back and toast the many awesome moments in this spring's sHell No! Campaign.
Let's recognize and celebrate the work we did, and the relationships that made this happen. Please join us for an evening of fun, music and festivities and building the relationships that will continue the movement this summer and fall.
Suggested Donation $5-$20 to support Rising Tide's Direct Action and Legal Fund, Drinks by donation.
When: Saturday, August 8th @ 7 PM
Where: "The Warehouse" 4810 Airport Way South
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1624843074467017/

sHell No! Action Council Next Steps Meeting!
We brought the world's attention to what Shell is trying to do in the Arctic. We marched, picketed, kayaked, and risked arrest together. We pulled together crazy actions we dreamed up, and put our bodies on the line.
What next? The SNAC was a powerful organizing space for three months, but it also had it's problems. Many folks want to continue to challenge Shell and their Arctic Drilling aspirations. Others want to use the relationships and coalitions we've built to do more cross-movement organizing.
Come to this SNAC mass meeting and let's figure out some structures to continue building on our momentum into the fall.

When: Monday August 10th @ 6:30 PM
Where: Hillman City Collaboratory: 5623 Rainier Ave South

Hope to see you there!

Art of Participatory Leadership:
Creating Collective Action - Building Cultures of Innovation

September 17 - 19, 2015
8:00am - 5:30pm (Saturday til 5:00pm)

Pacific Lutheran University (PLU)
12180 Park Ave S, Tacoma, WA 98447
Tacoma, WA

PEOPLE ARE HUNGRY FOR MORE EFFECTIVE MEETINGS AND PRACTICES FOR WORKING BETTER TOGETHER AMIDST TIMES OF RAPID CHANGE AND HIGH COMPLEXITY.

We are awakening to different ways of being in leadership together, moving beyond the typical traps of adversarial agendas and into processes of co-learning and co-evolution that lead to wise action and change. We are seeking consultative processes and engagement strategies that bring out the best in our communities and foster collaboration. That’s what the Art of Participatory Leadership is all about.

Last year’s Art of Participative Leadership in Olympia, WA was wait-listed. This year’s gathering builds on that tradition — working to create collective impact and cultures of innovation.

The Art of Participative Leadership is an intensive 3-day experience where you will practice a set of simple yet powerful approaches for designing and hosting (facilitating) powerful conversations and meetings. It is an effective way of harnessing the collective wisdom and self-organizing capacity of groups. We believe that people give their energy and lend their resources to what matters most to them – in work as in life. These practices invite people to step in and respond to the challenges facing them in creative, authentic, compassionate and innovative ways.

71. sHell NO! activities in August
Thu Aug 6, 2015, 01:32 AM
Aug 2015

We just wanted to make sure you got this e-mail about the two SNAC events coming up this Saturday and Monday. For some it's been nonstop action in Portland and Alaska, for others a well deserved month off. Let's reconvene and chart a path forward!

72. Iran nuclear deal event in Seattle 8/19

Today, President Obama gave a bold speech in support of the Iran nuclear deal. He said "now, more than ever, we need clear thinking in our foreign policy," and I could not agree more.

This is a historic moment for our country to chart a new path toward a more principled foreign policy that puts diplomacy first.

I hope you will join our coalition partner, Council for a Livable World, to discuss this and more at their event in Seattle.

Tickets are on sale now for Politics on the Edge: From Seattle to Tehran. Join Col. Richard Klass (USAF, retired), Council for a Livable World's Angela Canterbury, and invited guest Rep. Suzan DelBene to discuss the debate over the Iran deal, foreign policy and the 2016 elections.

73. THE HUNTING GROUND--free screening of documentary on campus rape: Bellevue 8/15
Thu Aug 6, 2015, 11:04 PM
Aug 2015

FREE MOVIE SCREENING AND PANEL DISCUSSION August 15, 2015, 10:30 a.m.

BELLEVUE, Washington - Sexual violence on college campuses – it is an issue that is at the top of most parents’ minds when they send their student away every year. How can my child stay safe? What safeguards are in place? What is the administration doing to ensure my child’s safety? It is estimated that more than 100,000 college students will be victims of a sexual assault during the upcoming school year, which is rapidly approaching. It’s critical that students, parents, university leaders, and government come together, learn about this issue, and work together to end sexual violence on college campuses.

In cooperation with Legal Momentum, University of Washington, Momentum, Faculty Against Rape, Washington Coalition of Sexual Assault Programs, King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, Essex Community Outreach Corporation, Legal Voice, King County Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Sexual Violence Legal Services program of the YWCA Seattle|King|Snohomish, there will be a FREE screening of “The Hunting Ground” —a documentary on the rape crisis on college campuses – on Saturday, August 15th at 10:30 a.m. Weaving together footage and first-person testimonies, the film follows survivors as they pursue their education while fighting for justice. The screening will be followed by a robust discussion with a panel of experts on the issue of campus sexual violence.

“Sexual violence on college campuses is a significant issue impacting young women and men on many college campuses, both locally and nationally. IT’s a harsh reality that we can no longer ignore,” says event organizer and panel moderator Loria Yeadon. “If you’re not aware of the extent of this problem, watch this trailer.”

The discussion will be led by the following panelists:

77. More upcoming= sHell NO! actions
Fri Aug 28, 2015, 02:36 AM
Aug 2015

With Obama visiting Alaska on Monday things are really picking up steam on the ShellNo Campaign again. To respond we've restructured SNAC to operate with working groups instead of affinity groups so that more concrete action can be planned. The group is also planning a March Against Hypocrisy on Monday to coincide with President Obama's visit to the Arctic.

Updates around Shell:

- Having been given the final permit from President Obama, Shell is now digging for oil in the Arctic (boo.)

- Speaking of the devil, President Obama, will be visiting Alaska to talk about Climate Change at the GLACIER conference. (More on what we're doing about that later).

Solidarity Action on August 31st: March Against Hypocrisy

On Monday our allies and friends in Alaska will greet President Obama and demand that he stop Arctic Drilling. In Seattle we will March in solidarity with them and Against Hypocrisy!

Assemble at 11:30 am at Occidental Park

Funeral procession at noon from Occidental Park with a loud marching band, art and props calling out the hypocrisy of Obama.

Solemn die-in at the Federal building, with speakers.

Please RSVP and invite your friends to the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/867671683301777/

Structure of SNAC going forward: At the meeting two weeks ago, we brought up the idea of moving away from working through affinity groups and introducing Working Groups as a way to restructure SNAC.

These working groups will be fluid and can change based on time-sensitive requirements. Some working groups will be: Tactics/Direct Action, Outreach, Education, Legal, Media, Website and Digital Resources, Finance, Fundraising.

The working groups will meet outside of the regular large meeting and will report back to the general meeting. More to be discussed around these at the next SNAC meeting!

Some working group meetings coming up are:

Tactics team: Meeting Thursday 4:30 pm at Council House, 1501 17th Ave

Contact Cynthia 808-756-4955

Art team: Meeting Thursday 3pm at the Powerhouse. 3940 Fremont Ave N, Seattle, WA 98103

Help wanted, especially sculptors or anyone with sculpting experience!

See you Monday at the action!

In solidarity,

SNAC Organizing Committee

75. Two Upcoming Clemency Hearings Friday, September 11 in Olympia
Sun Aug 23, 2015, 06:56 PM
Aug 2015

In the early years of Washington State's Three Strikes law, Paul Rivers and David Conyers, pictured above, were sentenced to Life Without the Possibility of Release for Robbery 2, an unarmed crime classified in the lowest quarter of Washington's criminal seriousness scale.

These crimes carry a standard minimum term of 3 months and a standard maximum term of 7 years. Neither Mr. Rivers nor Mr. Conyers has any conviction for a more serious crime. Each man has served more than 20 years.

Both have clemency hearings scheduled for Friday, September 11, 2015 in Olympia, Washington. Address/ Directions.

The members of Washington State's Clemency and Pardons Board who are present at the hearing will determine and announce during the hearing whether they recommend conditional clemency release for the two petitioners. Community members who are present in support are noted by the board.

Last year, members of this email list helped complete a successful fundraiser for David Conyers' first three months of rent in the community should he be released. His letter of thanks, information on how to contribute further to the fundraiser, and a link to a video including interviews with both men are HERE:

79. Rally Sept. 2 in Seattle for safety at Darigold
Fri Aug 28, 2015, 02:41 AM
Aug 2015

Please join us on Wednesday, September 2, at 12 noon for a rally at Judge Charles M. Stokes Overlook Park, right next to Darigold headquarters. Please RSVP here and let us know you will be joining us. http://action.ufw.org/page/m/3bed9e0a/1453614c/44bbacfb/2b6e543e/3794820832/VEsA/
After the rally, a small delegation will deliver to Darigold a petition with more than 30,000 signatures asking the giant corporation to meet about dairy worker safety with the United Farm Workers and worker families that have suffered deaths and injuries. The petitions will be delivered in a casket to represent workers who have lost their lives laboring in Washington state dairies.

Among those there will be the widow of dairy worker Randy Vasquez who died a gruesome death, drowning in a manure pond at a Darigold-member farm. The state Labor and Industries Department investigated Randy’s death and cited and fined the dairy $6,800 for violations that included failing to post warning signs or fence the lagoon where he died. According to the Yakima Herald, the dairy owner is contesting the citation and penalties.

Randy’s tragic death earlier this year has shaken up the farm worker community and inspired many to take up the battle to improve dairy workers’ safety.http://action.ufw.org/page/m/3bed9e0a/1453614c/44bbacfb/2b6e543e/3794820832/VEsA/

Darigold is the largest dairy cooperative based in the Pacific Northwest. It has a responsibility to make sure dairy workers have a safe and healthy work environment. Please join us. Together we can improve the lives of dairy workers.

The Seattle City Council will be holding a special evening public meeting to hear directly from YOU, the community, on inclusionary housing and the HALA recommendations. We need BIG turnout, and we're counting on you to make your voice heard.

Over the past many months and years, you have told our elected leaders that mandatory, inclusionary housing is a proven tool to create thousands of affordable homes across the income spectrum. This mroning, Mayor Murray and Councilmember Mike O'Brien stood together to announce legislation on a commercial linkage fee and residential inclusionary housing program. The City Council is expecting to hear from all of you as it considers this legislaion, beginning with a public hearing on the residential inclusionary housing resolution on Sept 9th.

On the 9th, the Council will also consider a resolution to implement the HALA workplan, and we need our leaders to hear loud and clear that the community stands behind swift, strong action on affordable housing. The HALA plan includes a number of exciting policies, including renewing and expanding the Seattle Housing Levy, seeking state authorization for a local Real Estate Excise Tax and Housing Preservation program, and adopting stronger tenant protections to help people access and remain in stable housing.

Please stand with us in supporting these critical programs to help preserve and create 20,000 affordable homes in the next 10 years! To help us stay organized, please email us your RSVP to let us know you'll be attending. kayla@housingconsortium.org

82. Raising Minimum Wage: Hurt or Help 9/10/2015 in Tacoma
Thu Sep 10, 2015, 02:52 AM
Sep 2015
http://www.thepierceprogressive.org/actionalertsminimumwageimpacttacoma

What: Learn Whether Raising the Minimum Wage Helps or Hurts a City Economy
When: This Thursday, September 10, 2015, at 7:00 p.m.
Where: IBEW Local 76 Hall, 3049 S. 36th Street, Tacoma, WA 98409

On Thursday, September 10, 2015, at 7:00 p.m., John Burbank will answer the question “What Really Happens when Cities Raise the Minimum Wage?” at a free public presentation held as part of the Pierce County Democrats general meeting. All, including non-Democrats, are encouraged to attend the presentation at the IBEW Local 76 Hall, 3049 S. 36th Street, Tacoma, WA 98409. Mr. Burbank is Executive Director of the Economic Opportunity Institute, an independent, non-partisan, and non-profit public policy think tank, based in Seattle.

Tacoma’s voters will decide this November whether to raise the minimum wage. While a raise would obviously benefit workers who receive it, many may wonder how the wage increase will affect the local economy and businesses. Linda Isenson, Chair of the Pierce County Democrats, noted that some have asked, “Will increasing the minimum wage mean fewer jobs? Will businesses leave Tacoma for lower-wage cities?” Ms. Isenson stated that “this Thursday’s presentation is a chance for the public to get past the scary rhetoric and learn for themselves the answers to those and other questions, based on actual data.”

Mr. Burbank earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Washington’s Daniel J. Evans School of Public Policy and Governance. Before founding the Economic Opportunity Institute in 1998, Mr. Burbank served in many other positions, including as the project manager of the Sand Point Community Housing Association and as staff coordinator for the Washington State Senate. He also speaks Finnish, but promises to give his presentation in English.

The Pierce County Democrats meet monthly, either as a general membership or Executive Board meeting. The public is always welcome to participate. The meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month, at the IBEW Local 76 Hall, 3049 S. 36th Street, Tacoma, WA 98409. The September 10 meeting is a quarterly general membership meeting. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. for a potluck and socializing; the meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. Those attending the potluck are encouraged (but not required) to bring something to share.

90. October hearings on oil trains in Skagit
Thu Oct 1, 2015, 03:23 AM
Oct 2015

Last week the first stage in that review began: the scoping comment period. We have fought hard to get this chance, now we have to make the most of it. Between now and November 5th we need to do everything we can to show that the public insists on the most thorough possible review of this reckless plan. Shell’s recent decision to pull out of the Arctic will only increase their desire to rush this oil train project though, so your help is even more important now.

In the next month, we need help with these three things:

1. Submit a detailed scoping comment. You’ve already written about this project. And a copy of your earlier comment is attached for reference. If you would like advice on adapting what you have already said as a scoping comment, and for more information on how to send it in, take a look at this short article on how to write a detailed comment http://www.standuptooil.org/shell-anacortes/

Attend a hearing (or two!) in person. We would love if you speak, but you don’t have to. We want to pack these rooms! RSVP HERE and we will send you everything you need to know. http://www.standuptooil.org/shell-anacortes/

- Mount Vernon: Tue., Oct. 13, Best Western Plus, 2300 Market St., 4-8 p.m.

- Anacortes: Wed., Oct. 14, Anacortes Middle School, 2202 M Ave, 4-8 p.m.

- Lynnwood: Mon., Oct. 19, Lynnwood Convention Center, 3711 196th St. SW, 4-8 p.m.

3. Help us reach out to more people. We could use volunteer help over the next few weeks. Attend an informational gathering this Sunday (October 4) from 4-6 at the North Sound Brewery (map) to get the details. Or contact Anna at Anna@ForestEthics.org for more information.Together we can make sure that Shell’s dangerous project gets the full scrutiny that it deserves.

Thank you for your help!

AGRA Watch Film Screening: "Seed of Freedom" and Update on one year of collaboration since Africa-US Food Sovereignty Summit

Location: Central Co-op's Rochdale Room - 1900 E Madison St, Seattle
Join AGRA Watch to watch a short film about seed sovereignty in Africa, and, to mark the one-year anniversary since our Africa-US Food Sovereignty Summit. Let’s celebrate and discuss the next steps of our work in collaboration with the African food sovereignty movement! “The origin of food is seed,” says Food Sovereignty Ghana. “Whoever controls the seed controls the entire food chain.” This event is part of the US Food Sovereignty Alliance Month of Community Power – we join our partners globally in actions that raise awareness and help end hunger and poverty by building more just food and farm systems and by reclaiming our commons! About the film: “The story of seed has become one of loss, control, dependence and debt. It’s been written by those who want to make vast profit from our food system, no matter what the true cost. It’s time to change the story. Seeds of Freedom charts the story of seed from its roots at the heart of traditional, diversity rich farming systems across the world, to being transformed into a powerful commodity, used to monopolise the global food system." We will provide food and drink! RSVP’s appreciated – email us.

96. People's Climate March 2015: Our Lives, Our Work, Our Future; Seattle 10/14
Fri Oct 9, 2015, 03:13 AM
Oct 2015

Local Action for Global Climate Justice

October 14, 5 PM Meet at Seattle City Hall, 4th Avenue & James, March at 5:30 PM to Occidental Park, Pioneer Square

Naomi Klein, author of This Changes Everything and The Shock Doctrine will join speakers from all walks of life to speak at Occidental Park.

Gather at 5:00 PM at Seattle City Hall Plaza to make climate ribbons to send to the International Climate Conference in Paris in December. Seattle's action is part of a national day of action across the country.

March at 5:30 PM sharp to Occidental Park where we will hear Naomi Klein, other speakers and video projections of people from across the state talking about how climate change is affecting our lives, what we're doing about it, and what our hopes for the future are. We want our voices to be heard in Paris and beyond.

PSARA members can join a diverse coalition of communities of color, workers, immigrants, activists and everyday people on October 14 as we build upon last year's successful People's Climate March in New York. We want to send a message that will be heard from Seattle to Paris: Our communities are united in the fight against climate change. Climate change affects low-income and communities of color disproportionately, and a just transition away from fossil fuels means making sure that no one gets left behind, especially the communities most affected.

Please look for the PSARA banner and join us in this important action.

97. Testify against oil trains in Lynnwood 10/19
Sun Oct 11, 2015, 05:00 AM
Oct 2015

They will decide the future of oil trains through Seattle, and they want to hear from you.

Leaders from the state Department of Ecology and Skagit County will hold a public hearing on Shell’s oil train proposal on October 19. Shell wants to ship 2.5 million gallons of Brakken crude oil by train every week to its refinery in Anacortes. These six mile-long trains would travel along the Columbia River, through Vancouver, and up through Seattle to Anacortes, increasing the potential for a heartbreaking crash that takes lives and destroys our environment.

Fuse members across the state are speaking out in droves against Shell’s dirty, dangerous oil train proposal. More than 1,700 Fuse members have already submitted written comments against the proposal. Now we have a chance to speak directly to oversight officials and tell them it’s time to reject fossil fuel in favor of a clean energy economy.

We need a huge turnout in Lynnwood to show decision makers that we reject Shell’s dangerous proposal. Will you join Fuse members on October 19 to speak out against oil trains?

http://act.fusewashington.org/signup/oil_trains_lynnwood?t=3&akid=2294.2366.iicAGC

We rejected coal export terminals, we fought Shell’s attempt to drill in the Arctic, and now it is time to stop the increasing number of dirty, dangerous oil trains from traveling through our communities.

An increase in dirty and dangerous oil trains, pipelines, and tankers in Puget Sound would dramatically increase the risk of a spill or explosion in the Northwest. It’s time to tell our leaders to put people ahead of profits and reject the increase in oil trains through our communities.

Will you join Fuse members in Lynnwood to speak out against dirty, dangerous oil trains?

Tue Oct 13, 2015, 12:43 AM
Oct 2015

TUES October 27, 7-9pm: Lecture by Eric Holt-Giménez

Got Green? will speak about statewide organizing for climate justice in partnership with Communities of Color for Climate Justice
Location: UW Campus, Architecture Hall Room 147 (Map). Event is FREE, no RSVP required. Help us publicize: Share Facebook event.

CAGJ aims to raise awareness about the connections between climate justice and food sovereignty. We are thrilled that Eric Holt-Giménez will speak on this topic as part of his Northwest tour.

About Eric’s talk: “Global warming has become the largest single threat to health, community well-being and the environment, worldwide. Mass migrations, famine, and conflict over food and water access and the concomitant spread of chronic and communicable disease are already underway. The disastrous effects of climate change fall hardest on low-income communities and people of color, in the US and around the world. “Climate victims” are linked by the critically high levels of vulnerability; the result of historical (and recent) processes of dispossession, exploitation and oppression. Our modern food system is at the center of both the causes and effects of climate change. Pathways to community climate resilience and the reversal of global warming pass through the multiple challenges of capitalism, racism—and food.”

Sponsored by Community Alliance for Global Justice and University of Washigton: Anthropology, CHID, Geography, Landscape Architecture, Latin American and Caribbean Studies/Henry M. 100. People’s Budget Town Hall in Seattle 10/27

Oct 2015

People’s Budget Town Hall
Tuesday, October 27, 6:00 PM
Bertha Knight Landes, Seattle City Hall

Sisters and Brothers,

The 2016 Seattle city budget proposal is woefully inadequate. It won’t make a dent in the affordable housing crisis, it falls tens of millions of dollars short in social service funding, and it fails to meet our city's daily needs. We need to fight for a People’s Budget!

Building on last year’s success, the People’s Budget Town Hall will once again open up the doors of City Hall to ordinary people. I will moderate short panels on: Affordable Housing; Human Services & Public Safety; Progressive Taxation & Public Infrastructure; Education, Youth Jobs, Racial Justice; and Supporting Small Business.

Our goal is to get the working people of Seattle who are excited about social justice in the same room as some of our city’s best advocates and organizers. Let’s discuss how a People’s Budget would address the chronic underfunding of our needs.

Help to make the People’s Budget Town Hall a success. Here are two ways you can lend a hand. We hugely appreciate anything you are able to do.

Come - Mark Tuesday, October 27 on your calendar and come to the People’s Budget Town Hall. We need to pack City Hall!
Mobilize - Help us promote the event. Please forward this email to everyone you know who may be interested. Visit the Facebook Event, share it and invite all your friends. Please tweet about it, too.

Let’s do it! Together we can lay the foundation for a budget that fully funds all of our city's basic human needs. We can make this city a livable place for all, rather than a playground for the rich.

Solidarity,
Kshama Sawant

101. New Economy Get-Together in Seattle 11/13
Sat Oct 24, 2015, 05:39 AM
Oct 2015

All around us, innovators are building cooperative, ethical, and community-rooted enterprises, reclaiming the commons, and democratizing and reorienting finance. We are finding new ways to share skills and goods, measure success, and meet growing human needs on a finite planet. At the same time, our growing mobilizations in the streets are building power to resist and replace unjust systems. Through all of these efforts, a movement is emerging that could change our society and the world. Join us to meet other advocates and practitioners, build a shared narrative, and strengthen the emergent local network for systemic change.

The New Economy Get-Together is a flagship event of the national New Economy Week 2015. Now in its third year, and for the first time with a Seattle event, New Economy Week 2015 will challenge us to explore what systemic change really looks like. We hope that by drawing attention to big ideas and concrete examples of real solutions, we will expand the public conversation and what’s politically possible, bringing us closer to a just, sustainable, and democratic society.

Mon Oct 26, 2015, 04:56 AM
Oct 2015

Not Another Haiyan, Climate Justice Now! – Nov. 7th, 11 AM, Beacon Food Forest.

In 2013 the largest storm in history, Typhoon Haiyan, devastated the Philippines. On Nov. 7th, we will March to remember the victims and survivors of Typhoon Haiyan and climate disasters worldwide. While we do we demand an end to fossil fuel exports driving these disasters and the systems of imperialism, capitalism and CO2lonialism that created this and other disasters,

Peoples in the Global South bear the least responsibility for the climate crisis, but every year they face more and more of its devastating impacts. Meanwhile U.S. Corporations plan to extract the dirtiest coal and oil and ship it overseas to the Global South, where much of it will power further extractive neo-colonial land grabs and devastation.

Proponents of fossil fuel exports argue that people in India, China and East Asia are demanding our dirtiest energy. But on Nov. 7th climate activists will stand with our allies in the Pinay, South Asian and Chinese communities to say NO to dirty energy exports, CO2lonialism and more climate chaos.

Join us: https://actionnetwork.org/events/not-another-haiyan-climate-justice-now

March from Beacon Hill - Seattle's historically Filipino community, into Georgetown site of some of Seattle's worst environmental justice and the staging grounds for fossil fuel exports!

Oct 2015

Don’t miss the opportunity to meet author and activist Deepa Iyer as she tours the country with her new book, We Too Sing America: South Asian, Arab, Muslim, and Sikh Immigrants Shape our Multiracial Future.

In We Too Sing America, nationally renowned activist Deepa Iyer catalogs recent racial flash points, from the 2012 massacre at the Sikh gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, to the violent opposition to the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and to the Park 51 Community Center in Lower Manhattan. Iyer explores issues in today’s headlines, including xenophobia, Islamophobia, and racial anxiety through accessible language that blends personal narratives and storytelling with critical policy analysis. Iyer explores the role of the state in perpetuating racism through detentions, national registration programs, police profiling, and constant surveillance. Through the perspectives of young South Asian, Muslim, Arab, and Sikh activists who are part of new movements, including those of undocumented youth and Black Lives Matter, the book delves into how our racial identities and solidarities are shifting as demographics change in America.

Join Iyer around the country for book readings and race talks that include the voices of local activists. To set up a workshop or forum around the themes of the book, please email deepa@deepaiyer.com and visit www.deepaiyer.com.

Sat Nov 7, 2015, 02:05 AM
Nov 2015

Join us on November 19th for Puget Sound Sage's Annual Cocktail Reception at the Westin as we honor Michael Woo for his lifelong commitment to racial and economic justice!

MICHAEL WOO, 2015 Visionary for Justice Awardee

Michael Woo began organizing rank and file construction workers in the 1970s to ensure good jobs for communities of color. As a union member himself, he has always seen unity among tradespeople as the path to justice and transformation of the industry.

Over the years, he helped found and grow many organizations and organizing efforts, including LELO, FAST Jobs and Got Green. He has led the fight and helped win groundbreaking workforce agreements across the region.

Most recently, he built and led a multi-sector coalition to pass Priority Hire in Seattle City Council this past January. This groundbreaking policy ensures that a high percentage of living wage, union construction jobs will go to workers of color, women and other workers living locally in high poverty zip codes in our city.

WA Fair Trade Coalition Annual Breakfast

Join the Washington Fair Trade Coalition and Velma Veloria for a Fair Trade Breakfast fundraiser to learn what steps we can take here in Washington State to fight trafficking and push for fair trade policies.

gillian@washingtonfairtrade.org <gillian@washingtonfairtrade.org>

What does trade policy have to do with human trafficking?

In July, Malaysia was upgraded from the human trafficking blacklist to the warning list by the U.S. Department of State Human Trafficking Report, despite recent discoveries of hundreds of mass graves and trafficking camps. The outcry from human rights groups was immediate, as Malaysia forms part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a massive new free trade agreement in the works, and every indicator was that the upgrade was a political move as trade negotiations neared an end. For the last 20 years, NAFTA-style free trade policies have pushed a particular form of globalization on the world, making it easier for the largest companies to scour the world looking for cheap labor, while simultaneously undoing price controls that keep staple foods affordable, and stripping indigenous and poor communities of their rights to communally managed land and water resources. This mass destabilization of local societies leaves entire groups of people disenfranchised, desperate, and vulnerable to being trafficked.

Velma Veloria, former State Representative and longtime anti-trafficking advocate in Washington, argues that neoliberal trade creates many of the push and pull factors that lead to trafficking. "Forms of slavery and human trafficking are not just outcomes of globalization; they are part of the... process itself."

122. Black Friday events during Thanksgiving week;Seattle, Federal Way, Mt Vernon
Sat Nov 21, 2015, 04:55 AM
Nov 2015

Walmart workers are taking action this Black Friday. They are struggling for respect from the largest employer in America. Walmart employees are paid such low wages that many have to skip meals, make sacrifices so that their children can eat, and go to work hungry.

Meanwhile, Walmart workers are not allowed to use their company 10% discount on healthy food including meat, eggs, vegetables or even bread. The average Walmart worker has less than $5 per day to spend on food for themselves and their families. By that same measure, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon would have $5,225 a day.

This year, in the 15 days leading up to Black Friday, Nov. 27, Walmart workers and their supporters across the country are conducting fasts to call attention to the shameful treatment of Walmart employees.FastFor15 is fifteen days of action led by Walmart workers fasting. They are standing witness at Walton homes, Board of Directors homes and Walmart stores and offices.

- On Monday, Nov. 23 - the Puget Sound area's local day of fasting - by either abstaining from eating or eating only what you can buy for $4.95. Join fasters at Seattle's Westlake Plaza, 4th & Pine, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday.

- Join the Black Friday protests on Friday, Nov. 27:

- FEDERAL WAY - At 10 a.m., meet at the Federal Way Walmart, 1900 S. 314th St.
- MOUNT VERNON - At 10 a.m. meet at the Mount Vernon Walmart, 2301 Freeway Dr. Meet at the Southeast corner of the parking lot.

We will be able to support Walmart workers by signing the petition to get Walmart to extend its 10% employee discount to cover all food. We will stand in solidarity as food is distributed to Walmart workers reflecting the amount of $$s the Walmart CEO is paid daily to cover his food costs.

While the Waltons own more wealth than the bottom 42% of our country, Walmart workers are struggling every day to put food on the table.

***********************

The Mortgage Crisis has had a direct impact on Washington State housing, property values, rental rates, homelessness and education.

Some laws and policies have been put in place in an attempt to address issues, but many laws are
nadequate or not being enforced. More legislation needs to be implemented. Additional assistance needs to be given to struggling borrowers or displaced homeowners.

If you are a policy maker or journalist wanting to gain a better understanding of the issues, a member of a non-profit or faith based organization assisting those most affected, a troubled homeowner suffering alone in silence or just a concerned citizen trying to find out what can be done to help, please come and join us for an honest and open discussion aimed at bringing about positive change.

Marie McDonnell of McDonnell Property Analytics will be this session’s keynote speaker.McDonnell Property Analytics was recently commissioned by the City of Seattle to conduct a review of mortgage documents filed in the King County public records to determine if the documents filed were in accordance with Washington State law.McDonnell Property Analytics has provided its expertise in landmark foreclosure and mortgage fraud cases across the nation (see examples below) and has leveraged this knowledge with systems capable of analyzing very large amounts of case files/documents.

Ms. McDonnell will be sharing the results of this audit. You will be shocked by the findings. After the keynote presentation, various groups will present the reality of the rippling effect these mortgage practices have had on the economies of our local communities. You’ll be left with some practical steps you can take to assist in making a difference.

An open microphone will be allocated for a Questions and Answers session.

Event sponsors will be available for sharing their specific offerings/information.

Come and learn why it is important to YOU!

Food Access, Food Sovereignty, and Farmworker Solidarity:
Dinner & Panel Discussion
Location - Southside Commons: 3518 E Edmunds St, Seattle WA 98118.

We are experiencing unprecedented numbers of extreme fires, floods, hurricanes, and droughts and it’s only getting worse. Lost livelihoods and economic instability forces people to migrate from their homes.

How is it that the providers of the world's food, the majority of whom are women, are the most food insecure and don't have the means to feed their families? The current economic system, build on exploiting people and the natural systems we all depend on for life, is the root cause of climate chaos and inequity. We need to transition our economy to one that places people and the planet above lining the pockets of the rich. Come enjoy tamales and other holiday delights and learn from some folks struggling for a just transition to a people and planet-centered economy. Speakers will include folks from Community to Community, Community Alliance for Global Justice, and Got Green. Food and childcare will be provided.

Thu Dec 10, 2015, 02:35 AM
Dec 2015

It is disturbing how many attacks lately have targeted women’s health clinics. Even here in Washington, a domestic terrorist set fire to the Pullman clinic, causing extensive damage.

Extremists emboldened by the false and misleading videos about Planned Parenthood have systemically targeted community health clinics, their doctors, and the men and women who seek health care.

At this painful moment, we need to come together as a community to say we stand united against senseless acts of violence. We are joining with our friends at Planned Parenthood this Saturday, December 12, at a solidarity rally to remember the lives of those who have died and to show our support for women’s private medical decisions.

Will you join us on Saturday to stand up to gun violence and say, "Enough is enough"?

Yes! I’ll come to the gathering on Saturday!

Can you join us as we rekindle our commitment to justice here in Durham on the eigth night of Hannukah?Come stand with us in support of refugees, and condemning racism & Islamophobia.

Where: Pacific Place, 600 Pine Street, Seattle
When: Sunday Dec 13th, 4:00pm

We will be holding nine signs, which, together, are in the shape of a Chanukah menorah. Each sign contains an injustice that we recommit ourselves to challenging.

Each night of Chanukah, Jews in different cities will hold up these signs and read aloud each commitment in a public space.

Our night to rekindle our commitments in Seattle is Sunday, December 13th-- will you be there with us?

We come together:

refusing to be silent about anti-Muslim and racist hate speech and hate crimes;
condemning state surveillance of the Muslim community;
challenging institutionalized racism and state-sanctioned anti-Black violence;
protesting the use of Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism to justify Israel’s repressive

policies against Palestinians; and
welcoming Syrian refugees and standing strong for immigrants’ and refugee rights.

We hope you will stand with us in Seattle on Dec 13th -- together, our calls for justice will reverberate all across the country.

In struggle,

Jewish Voice for Peace, Seattle Chapter

131. Dank Ladies meeting in Seattle 12/12
Sat Dec 12, 2015, 04:40 AM
Dec 2015

Meeting tomorrow at Uptown Espresso (500 Westlake) 12-2pm. We will be doing outreach afterwards at Westlake Center. Let me know if you want to join us.

We will hit the headlines, discuss Washington state, national, and international marijuana law reform news and make some strategic goals for 2016.

I’ll bring some materials so we can make Christmas cards for some of the women who are prisoners as a result of the failed and cruel war on drugs.

We will collect any toys or donations for Mary’s Place. They are an awesome organization dedicated to ensuring no child sleeps outside. The donations will go to the holiday shops where the kids get to “shop” for presents for the parents and vice versa. If you have something you’d like to donate, but you cant make the meeting, let me know and we can try arrange a pick up.

Bring your ideas, your questions, and your friends.
