Microsoft confirms thousands of layoffs in cloud-focused sales reorganization

Microsoft Corp. plans to cut thousands of jobs in a major salesforce reorganization to focus on selling the cloud, the Redmond company confirmed Thursday.

First reported by the Business Journal last week, the reorganization aims to focus Microsoft’s sales efforts around the company’s booming cloud business.

The layoffs will mostly affect worldwide sales and customer support roles, according to Business Journal sources who requested anonymity to preserve business relationships.

“Microsoft is implementing changes to better serve our customers and partners," Microsoft said in a prepared statement. "Today, we are taking steps to notify some employees that their jobs are under consideration or that their positions will be eliminated. Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis. This can result in increased investment in some places and, from time-to-time, re-deployment in others.”

Adobe did this a few years ago. You can't buy applications in a box with manual and CD anymore and upgrade when you want like what used to be a common practice and way of budgeting.

You download them now from the cloud and pay a monthly fee so they get a constant revenue stream from everybody.

You basically rent the programs. If you don't pay your programs don't work.
