Gun defenders: Assault weapons age limit doesn't belong in school safety bill
The Washington Legislature, activated in wake of the Parkland, Florida, massacre, came under heavy fire from gun rights defenders for a State Senate bill that would require that purchasers of semi-automatic assault rifles be at least 21 years old.
The Senate Ways and Means Committee took up legislation Tuesday that would expedite law enforcement response to school shootings, and set up a Students Protecting Students program in the Attorney General's office, and raise the age limit for purchasing such weapons as the AR-15.
The legislation is "a gun control bill improperly co-mingled with a school safety bill," argued gun rights advocate Tom Oster. He added: "Referring to a gun as semi-automatic is almost like calling a car's transmission automatic."
"Hiding a bunch of gun control in a school safety bill is wrong," added hearing witness Ian Dunleavy.
