Trump's steel tariff will make it even more expensive to build in Seattle
The heartburn over rising construction costs in the Puget Sound region became more severe Thursday when President Donald Trump said he will impose a 25 percent tariff on imported steel.
From the third quarter of 2017 to the fourth, the cost of structural steel decking climbed 3.6 percent, while the price of steel doors and frames increased more than 6 percent, according to the Seattle-area office of Mortenson Construction. Now general contractors are calculating how much more it will cost to buy I-beams, plates and rebar for public infrastructure and private development projects.
Mortenson was still analyzing how the planned tariff could affect their business and declined to comment Thursday. A representative of general contractor Lease Crutcher Lewis also declined to comment as did an official at steel distributor Seaport Steel.
There's little doubt steel prices would rise if the president follows through on his pledge that also could start a trade war. That would harm the economy of Washington, which is the most trade dependent state in the country.
