Bellevue School District nabs 107 drivers illegally passing school buses

Bellevue School District's initiative to put cameras on the stop-sign paddles of their buses is going over well. To the tune of 107 tickets in the first month.

In January, the cameras were first put into use (after a month-long grace period in December) and began recording drivers who illegally passed a school bus, recording an image and video of the passing vehicle.

As reported by the Bellevue Reporter, 107 violations were recorded in the first month of use, across all 27 buses with cameras in use. Each clip — once reviewed by a deputy who checks to see if there was an actual violation — results in a ticket and a $419 fine.

"I'm surprised that it was that many. We put out a lot effort to get the word out that this was happening," Melissa deVita, Bellevue School District's deputy superintendent of finance and operations, told the Bellevue Reporter.

Put kids' lives in danger? You deserve that fine.

There is a company in Australia that has been selling this camera scam to school districts as a fund raiser. The tickets were sent to drivers using official looking notices but the drivers actually had no legal obligation to pay. The Australian investors got about 70-805 of the money paid in extorted fines.

One school bus in Atlanta was parked on a wide almost deserted street, when it wasn't actually driving any children, with no lights on. They just confused drivers -many of whom slowed down and then continued driving. A few weeks week later the driver would get an official looking letter in the mail with a demand for
4300 bucks or else. Many people were horrified and paid the phone, illegal tickets that went to some office in Nevada.

Georgia passed a law to prevent worst parts of the scam, lowered the fine but it still smells.

The Bellevue District may well be corrupt. Someone signs these contracts and I would not be surprised if kickbacks are involved.

I am sick of this bs type of corruption. There is no epidemic of drivers passing school busses. Camera could be used by a district without teaming up with thieving crony capitalists.

As I say"I get more and more cynical but it is never enough."
