The city of Seattle on Tuesday said global engineering company WSP will lead a study to determine the feasibility of covering more of Interstate 5 through downtown with a lid.
I-5 already is lidded between Union and and Seneca streets with the 5-acre Freeway Park, and the WSP team will explore opportunities to enlarge the lid so it covers the freeway from Madison Street to Denny Way.
WSP, which has a Seattle office, will head the team investigating structural, urban design and financing options. Other companies on the team are the local and national firms of Shiels Obletz Johnsen, OJB Landscape Architecture, Magnusson Klemencic Associates, BergerABAM, Rule Seven, Framework, HR&A Advisors and Enviroissues.
The $1.5 million study is expected to take approximately 12 months and will be guided by community input, an inter-agency technical team including state and federal transportation officials, and a city-appointed Feasibility Study Steering Committee whose members' names were not available. The money comes from the "community benefits agreement" tied to the development of the 1.6-million-square-foot state Convention Center addition, which is under construction.

And what's it going to cost? My guess is it won't be cheap.

(60,010 posts)been gone from Wash. for many years now.....when did they build that lid?
and did they build it to serious earthquake standards?
with quality cement?
Asking that because of the Oakland Bay bridge that was done not too long ago with imported Chinese material, and now is crumbling.
