Washington moves up presidential primary to March

Washington has officially moved its presidential primary from late May to early March, and made it compatible with the Democratic Party's rules for selecting delegates to its 2020 national convention in Milwaukee.

Gov. Jay Inslee, himself a candidate for the party's nomination, signed the bill into law with two Republicans, Secretary of State Kim Wyman and ex-S.O.S. Sam Reed, standing beside him.

"This bill does strengthen Washington state's role in the national democratic process," said Inslee, who is playing on the national stage.

In words of chief sponsor Sen. Sam Hunt, D-Olympia, writing on the Washington State Wire, "a few thousand caucus" attendees will be replaced by "millions in a presidential primary."

Washington has had a meaningless "beauty contest primary." Hillary Clinton won it in 2016, months after she was swamped by supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, in the Democrats' precinct caucuses.

The parties will have unusual power over the primary. They select which candidates appear on the ballot. Voters must pick one party's ballot and make a selection on it. The Democrats require that only ballots from voters who identify with that party may be considered valid.
