Seattle councilor Rob Johnson will resign in April, forcing temporary appointment in election year
Seattle City Councilmember Rob Johnson, who had already announced he would not seek re-election to a second term, said Thursday that he will resign in April.
The resignation will trigger an appointment process that gives the rest of the council 20 days to select a replacement who will hold the seat until election results are finalized in November. The newly elected member will take office then, rather than at the beginning of 2020.
Johnson's announcement came just days after he helped finalize plans for upzoning neighborhood hubs, a long-in-the-making measure to increase urban density and raise funds for affordable housing.
"I depart City Hall feeling immensely proud of working alongside my talented, dedicated staff to accomplish nearly all that I set out to do when I decided to run for this position," Johnson said in a statement about his resignation posted on his council page.
His last day will be April 5.
