A New Vietnam Memorial Debuts In Seattle Memorial Day Weekend
SEATTLE, WA A new Vietnam War memorial and park will be dedicated on Saturday at Boeing Field featuring a restored Boeing bomber, and a speech by former Secretary of Defense James Mattis.
The centerpiece of the memorial will be a restored Boeing B-52G Stratofortress 59-2584 Midnight Express. The plane will sit in the middle of a new park meant to memorialize the 8,000 war planes lost during the Vietnam era. There will also be a statue of an aviator returning home from war in honor of the pilots from the Cold War and Vietname War eras.
The new park and memorial, including the restoration of the B52, was largely funded through donations to Project Welcome Home. The Midnight Express plane had been sitting at Paine Field for 24 years before restoration began. The bomber was repainted beginning in 2017, and then disassembled and transported to Boeing Field in 2018.
The B52 on display at the new memorial was completed in 1960 and was originally intended to deliver nuclear weapons, if necessary, according to the museum. It was in service until 1991, when it was given to the museum on loan.
