Wisconsin: League of Conservation Voters - legislature irrational repeal of wetland protection

http://uppitywis.org/league-conservation-voters-legislature-irrational-repeal-wetland

Madison –Senator Fitzgerald’s announcement yesterday that he is dissolving the Senate Select Committee on Mining Jobs, a committee that he formed last year, came just hours before conservationists were scheduled to meet with Senators to oppose the open-pit mining bills. Because of Fitzgerald’s action, the just-released Senate version of the open-mining bill has been shelved and its public hearing cancelled. In addition, he ordered the reviled Assembly version of the bill (AB 426) on the fast-track with a first stop in the Joint Finance Committee.

...

“Senator Fitzgerald’s irrational snap decision has put a stop to any genuine discussions about compromise on mining in Wisconsin by forcing it to a premature decision point. Today, Senators will hear from Wisconsin voters that the only acceptable decision is to reject the extreme Assembly open-pit mining bill,” said Anne Sayers, Program Director of Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters.

AB 426 was widely rejected by Wisconsin voters who sited among its many shortcomings:
Explicitly allowing groundwater, the source of most Wisconsinites drinking water, to be polluted.
Allowing our most sensitive wetlands to be filled in with mining waste and other materials.
Capping the amount of money that the DNR can collect back from a mining company for reviewing their permit.
Denying citizens the certainty of contested case hearings.

“We call on leaders in the Senate to reject this poor process and devastating policy and find a way to continue work on this issue in the right way,” concluded Sayers.
