State Rep. Brett Hulsey has announced his candidacy for governor, forcing a Democratic primary against Mary Burke.
Hulsey says he has a plan to reinvest more than $2 billion to create clean energy jobs, increase job training and send more money to public schools, the University of Wisconsin System and technical colleges.
Hulsey has been in the state Assembly for four years and served on the Dane County Board for 14 years. He runs an energy and environmental consulting business.

(8,879 posts)Even if the only outcome is to forge a stronger, more battle-ready Burke this is a win.
He's a business man , so my initial reaction to that is yo gag a bit, but maybe that gives him that mushy middle credibility he needs to win this thing. I love that he's come straight out from the start talking investment and spending on green energy and public education (K12-University). From that position alone we'll have a real alternative to Walker.

(4,949 posts)Much work has to be done as Hulsey's name recognition, what He stands for & represents etc. is low.
I mean He is not well known....

Dear Friends,
I am running for Governor to get Wisconsin working again.
Gov. Walkers Reign of Error has made Wisconsin 2nd in the nation in job losses and 35th in the nation in job creation. By restoring Gov. Walkers unnecessary cuts, we can prepare my two children and all our kids for higher wage jobs and put our neighbors back to work.
As a small business person who runs an energy and environmental consulting business, Better Environmental Solutions, I have worked on projects to create real jobs across our state from Cassville to Green Bay.
I am also the man with a plan-- my Get Wisconsin Working Again Plan which reinvests $2.1 billion to create clean energy jobs, increases job training, public school, UW system, and technical college investment, reverses the Walker tax increases on working families and senior citizens, saves babies, protects us from strip mining, and creates a Penokee Hills State Park instead of the worlds largest strip mine.
People want a real plan to put people to work, not more empty political rhetoric.
A former union vice president, I will make restoring worker safety, rights and bargained a top priority. We should restore worker rights and unnecessary pay cuts immediately to help jump start our economy and create safer workplaces.
Gov. Walkers statement that we were broke and $3 billion in debt was rated a Pants on Fire lie by PolitifactWI and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. These extreme cuts were unnecessary. During the over 60 hours of Assembly debate, I offered a number of amendments to fix the Walker Unfair Despair Act 10.
I have more than three decades of public service experience that include four years in the State Assembly, 14 years on the Dane County Board, 17 years at the Sierra Club, Environmental Policy Advisor to the Clinton Gore Campaign in 1992, and Volunteer in Service to America, VISTA, in the Alaska Energy Office during the 70s energy crisis.
My educational background includes studying at UW and Dartmouth College Thayer School of Engineering, a Masters Degree in Natural Science from the University of Oklahoma, and a B.A. in Political Economy from Middlebury College.
I would appreciate your vote in the Democratic primary in August and the general election in November. Sign up, volunteer and help me out.
Sincerely,
P.S. Tell all your friends too. Thanks!

Also in 2012, one of his own aides said she was terrified around him because of his behavior.

(85 posts)The problem with Brett Hulsey running is that he is Brett Hulsey. On most of the issues he is good but he is in the vocal minority in the Democratic Assembly Caucus and would probably have lost a primary for State Assembly if he ran again. He is not wrong about what he says most of the time either, but he publicly doesn't work well with members of the Democratic Caucus. I think Mary Burke has been running a better campaign as of late.

(8,879 posts)like he hasn't had much experience in tough elections.
Maybe he views his role as moving Burke left and shaking any skeletons out of Burke's closet, while forcing her to get stronger before the general gets in full swing?

(6,622 posts)The reactions around here are mixed between laughter and eye-rolling.
Brett Hulsey will do whatever puts Brett Hulsey's name up in lights. He has taken some good stands on environmental issues, but his character and personality just turn him into a punch line.
The kid in the lake, the campaign expenditures, the "teaching his staff to defend themselves" incident... way too much for him to overcome.

(8,509 posts)Likely because he doesn't play well with others - in this case the Dems. It's all about Brett Hulsey in Brett Hulsey's world. He was going to lose his primary, so he decided to throw some shit at the fan.
Cross your fingers that his behavior will not hurt the Dems.

"Madison -- One of state Rep. Brett Hulsey's first missions in his longshot campaign for governor is putting the finishing touches on a chicken costume he is making.
The Madison Democrat got a chicken mask at a Goodwill store. Now he's designing wings with long yellow feathers.
In a stop Tuesday in the Capitol press room, Hulsey told reporters he would challenge Democrat Mary Burke to debate him in each of Wisconsin's 72 counties between now and the Aug. 12 primary. He said he expected she would not agree to the plan, at which point he will would launch Operation Chicken.
He said he would send somone to Burke campaign events around the state decked out in the chicken costume. The person would also wear a T-shirt that says, "Too chicken to be governor."
"As always, my goal is to provide the media with as much juicy red meat as possible," Hulsey said. "This is going to be a fun campaign."
The winner of the primary will face Republican Gov. Scott Walker in the Nov. 4 general election.
